  1. Holiday poem

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the shop
Not a creature was stirring, all the work just had stopped,
The tools were all hung on the peg board with care,
In hopes that Santa soon would be there

The cars were all parked safely covered in the garage,
My Roadster, My Pickup, and even my Hemi Dodge
My wife in her robe and I in my Batman P.J.'s
Had just settled down after shopping for days

When out on the driveway there arose such a clatter!
It sounded to me just like pressure plate chatter
On to the driveway I flew like the Flash
I tripped over the dog and landed in the trash

When there in the driveway beneath the Moon and the Stars
Sat a Model A Coupe with chrome ladder bars
As I walked up closer to get a better view
I noticed a Blown Flathead and cheater slicks too

There behind the wheel sat a driver so tuff
With Tattoos, an earring, and beard oh so ruff
Dressed in Black leather he looked like a Bruiser
I knew right away he must be the Flathead Cruiser"

He said "I pulled second, I pulled third, then I heard a big Bang,
Things started to smoke, things started to clang!"
"I spotted your big garage with hopes of repair"
His back seat was full of presents, but I tried not to stare.

"If you can fix my Ford and make it shift right
I will give you these gifts for ruining your night"
We opened the door and pushed the Ford in
Before I got underneath, he gave me a wink and a grin

The headers were hot, the slicks they were sticky
That blow-proof bell housing would make the job tricky.
I turned on my droplight and gave it a look
The big 3 inch exhaust was making me cook.

When there to my surprise what did I see?
The four tranny bolts had wiggled themselves free
I grabbed my trusty torque wrench and started to turn
As I tightened the last one I could smell my sleeves burn

He slid behind the wheel and then fired up that mill.
As I directed him out, just listening to it idle, it gave me a chill
A Big Blown Flattie with two 94's up top
Chrome reverse rims and a 2 inch suspension drop.

He eased it out to the street and set the line lock
I knew this would not be quiet, probably wake the whole block
He revved it to 6 grand and let the clutch pop
As the rubber and smoke poured from the tires I spotted a cop!

He released the line lock and let that Ford loose
This baby was ALL MOTOR with no signs of Juice!
He fishtailed sideways, and grabbed Third with plenty of guts.
With Police in full chase he screamed out for all
"MAKE SURE YOU USE LOCKTITE SO YOU DON'T LOOSEN YOUR NUTS!"

I've been running lean so far this season. That helped re-set my holiday timing a bit. Thanks Carl.

    Santa:
What do you want for Christmas little boy?

    Little boy:
My dad said to ask for a very large container of Makers Mark but I don't know what that is.
He also said something about a 1932 Model A but I think he may have been drunk at the time so how about a new Corvette.
    Happy Happy everyone.

Up here in the Northwoods sandals and socks were standard summer footware for many years, then the California yuppies moved in and "there goes the neighborhood".:D

    Hi Carl,

Happy Holidays! BTW the Blazer you scoped out for me in Roseville is still my daily driver. OT for a photo but here's the engine, old school sbc. My other truck has a blown flattie. :)

    Hey DDD,

Yuppies/Smuppies... it is a matter of taste and style, anywhere. In 2016, I had to put on long pants and a sweater for our granddaughter’s, mid-December Nutcracker performance in the middle of normally warm, inland, OC. It was 45-50 degrees. So, in 2016, it was 363 days of shorts, sandals, and t-shirts. (NO WHITE SOCKS IN SO CAL) In 2017, it was relatively mild weather all year, even in December. So, I broke the record and hit 365 days of shorts, sandals (no socks, ever…ha!) and various T-shirts.

Of course, elsewhere it was terrible weather during December and January. On the day of the 2017, mid-December Nutcracker performance, it was 82 degrees. It was definitely, shorts and sandals weather. The sock drawer is/was gathering dust as we speak.

So far in 2018, it has been odd, with sporadic rainfall, random cold weather (55 degrees), but still shorts, t-shirt and sandals weather, So Cal style. So, will it be another 365 days of the same? I feel sorry for everyone putting their hot rods away for the next several months. The recent, terrible, back East weather started from the West Coast.

Our awful week long rain, that caused mud slides and flash flooding, started it and traveled East, as most storms follow the monthly/yearly weather track. It was cold and rainy, but, not freezing where we were. The local mountains got the first big snowfall and it looks outstanding from far away. (It is great for the old Long Beach High School tradition of going to Big Bear after Christmas)

The dress attire of the day has three stages: (1) at-home shorts, (2) go to the grocery stores, shopping and malls shorts, and (3)dress up shorts for those nighttime dinners and performances. So Cal does have some advantages. What about the long pants? They have not been outside of the closet in 2 years.

Despite the weather, outside/open air driving does call for jackets and heaters, here. So, Northerners, Easterners and even the Midwesterners, our hearts go out to you this holiday season. Keep your family (and hot rods/customs) safe and warm.

upload_2018-12-19_3-47-53.png 2018 "Gathering of The Little Tribes"...So Cal

    Hello,

We have always started out decorating with this cool miniature tree during the Christmas season. It is stocked full of little ornaments with the date and our Granddaughter’s name on them. It was always fun to go to local stores and shops to find the ones pre-printed, but if they were hard to find, then we made ones ourselves.

The latest tradition in our house since 2011, but it is fun in the search for a new, small ornament with a name. (After all, Christmas is for children and the young.) But, even those fancy, garden nursery shops have tiny, blank ornaments, so, we have to be creative as to where the name will be painted.

At age 13, our Granddaughter is going on 30, but still enjoys looking at all of those tiny ornaments with her name and date on each one. Her memories are shorter, but they are still fresh in her growing brain. A teenager, but still likes family traditions.

As we start up our Christmas memories, it is one thing to remember family things happening during the vacation/holiday times. It is another to be able to remember one of the big-time gatherings for Long Beach teens up in the local mountains. Since we have obviously been out of the picture for a zillion years, our “Gathering of The Tribes” takes place in front of the tiny "Granddaughter Tree" in our shop/house.

    Jnaki

Once a year, the little cars, hot rods, coupes, trucks, customs, and roadsters somehow show up prior to our Granddaughter’s visits. It is our local, “Gathering of The Little Tribes” tribute to one of the most fun times for us as teenagers back in 1959-64 in Big Bear City, (near the lake), So Cal mountains.
