According to Chevrolet By The Numbers, by Alan Colvin, the 3720991 265 block was used for the complete model years of 56 and 57. In 57, it was offered as a passenger car with a 2 bbl. and standard transmission only and painted chartreuse, where 283s were orange. The 3731548 block was used as a passenger car 283, and as a 265 for truck applications in 57.

I would assume the hospital you are referring to is what used to be Oakwood Hospital. While standing on our bike seats sooner or later the Ford security would drive by and make us leave. However my buddies and me were not deterred and would soon go back. As I recall most of the proving ground activity was moved to Wixom Michigan. We lived in Melvindale not far away.

When I was stationed at CINCPACFLT with the USN, I had to drive by the USS Arizona Memorial everyday going to and from work. I will never forget the unprovoked carnage that took place on that fateful day in 1941.

 

Packard should have kept that '41 Clipper design and skipped those awful looking '48-'50 cars altogether.

I used to visit the memorial when our ship would stop for supplies 1966-1969 on way to Viet Nam. I had a 2'nd class in my division that had a brother die on the Arizona. His last name was Conlin. He always grieved when we pulled to port. Sad day indeed!

 

I used to attend the pines speedway 1963 1965 era. It was a fun track. Lots of people would rent a car and run it on the track during the spectator race at the end. Wasn't a good idea!

 

In early 1962 we put an Owens Orbit cam along with a 4 speed in one of my friends 57 Chevrolet 210 2 dr wagon. It was a 265 2 barrel engine painted a dirty yellow. Never thought about it but it was probably just standard grime for the time. We used a 62 stock shifter and had to use a torch to bend it to clear the bench seat. I remember it because my dad let use his tools in his machine shop. He also showed us how to set the torch, use wet rags around the shifter not burn the carpet.

We visited the memorial in the mid 60's. My dad had a cousin that is still entombed in the ship, my moms dad was stationed on the USS Pruitt, a mine sweeper, when Pearl was bombed. It's always amazed me that I had a relative from both sides of my family there at the same time. One made it home the other didn't. My grandpa was a 30 year Navy man, '27-'57. Joined at 15 and retired at 45 a full Commander.
