This photo was taken in 1951.
The boy in the photo is a 13 year old Bruce McLaren. who was diagnosed with a crippling "Perthes Disease"
So as a boy he needed crutches, and eventually 1 leg was shorter than the other requiring special footwear, and he had to learn to walk again.

Bruce overcame his handicap to be the youngest F1 winner in his time , Win the 24 hours of LeMans for Ford in 1966, and Totally dominate the CanAm series until his death at 32 years old in 1970.

His legacy went on ,with Indy Cars, F1 Cars and today McLaren Supercars

My dad worked with McLaren in the Can Am series and in 1969 during one of my visits to the shop with my dad Bruce gave me one of his driving suits. I still have it after all these years and remembering those times as a kid hanging around the shop brings back great memories.

    Gary,
I really do appreciate all your photos, but man you really need to get a life. Step away from the computer for a bit and find something in life to enjoy.

Staging Lane repairs at Mount Maunganui.jpg

75 yards behind the trees in the background, is one of the whitest sand beaches in the south pacific.[Just behind the trees was "Ocean Pines" holiday park]
The track got closed because it became prime real estate.

  19. It would suck for the rest of us if Gary got a different hobby.
Enjoy the photos he works tirelessly to find and post. Without telling someone you never met what to do. Really.
