Anyone know the year and make of the car in this photo. It's my grandfather in 1944 Iowa. I can recognize cars from the 1950s and 1960s, but some of these earlier cars really stump me!

    Thanks.

1941 Chevrolet Master Deluxe Coupe. I can't tell because of the photo, if the gas cap is on the right rear fender just left of the photo, it's a 5 passenger coupe. If the cap is on the quarter panel behind your Grandfather, it's a business coupe.

I did some enquiries and guess what, It was also built by the McConnachie Brothers.
It seems like they were quite innovative engineers as well as racers
I'll post the picture here again.
Kiwi ingenuity. The amazing tandem Zephyr powered 12 cylinder.jpg

Both Barry and Graham later moved to the USA.
Sadly Barry was killed in the USA while Off Road racing in the 1980's. Not much is known about this as the family have remained private

Here's a young Barry in a MK2 Zephyr dirt racer. It has been a privilege to see him race [a class act]

    Hey RM,

Nice photo of El Morro Beach and the“Super Grade” of PCH going South. This place is/was well known as a resort trailer park, in one serene setting, just across the street from the ocean in North Laguna Beach. In the early 50’s, my dad loved surf fishing on this beach. (to the right) Somehow, he had access from a friend to park in the spaces in the ocean side of the trailer park and we all walked to the low tide rocks for exploring and fishing.

The two brothers played all day here. I am sure my mother loved Laguna Beach from this time forward. Later on in the early 60s, she wanted to purchase some property or a home on the coastal area with an influx of cash that became available. The brothers were very happy, dad, not so much…it would have been a very long drive to Los Angeles and back daily. No growing up in Long Beach, but on the ocean in Laguna Beach? What was not to like?

The beach side trailers were the favorite and envy of all who drove by this serene beach location. The beach side and inland side trailers were also vacation homes of who knows who. Fires, massive amounts of people, pressure from the general public and city governments made this area a constant battle for more public access.

For us teenagers, when the conditions were right, that beautiful cliff point had the most powerful left rolling/tubing waves. The setting was nearly perfect with the backdrop of the tall cliffs and the fast waves coming toward the shoreline. Later on, a dentist built a massive home on the cliff’s edge and felt the protest of all concerned. That dark area of the cliff is where the (A giant castle size structure) was built on the top edge area.

The label “Super Grade” was given by our Long Beach group when we frequented this portion of highway going South to Trestles or San Diego. Back then, most surf vehicles were transportation only with the usual stock motors and low horsepower. The vans and my Flathead powered, 40 Ford Sedan Delivery had to get a running start down the other side of the highway, down the hill and then fight to get up that steep hill.

It was a case of never having the transmission in 3rd gear all the way up, as the hill usually won the battle. If the vans were loaded with the 4’s…4-teenagers, 4-50 lbs. boards, 4-towels, food, clothing sets, gas, and necessary gear, that made any car loaded down. Even with a limit of two in my Flathead 40 Ford Sedan Delivery, it was a constant battle to get up that steep, “Super Grade” in 3rd gear. The grade usually made us downshift to get up that steep hill.

Today, the trailers are gone and the whole area is called Crystal Cove State Park, Campground and beach. Now, there is an upgraded tunnel underneath the highway for access to the beach areas.

    “Times they are a changing…”
