A great photo of Cotton Henning adding methanol to Ted Horn's Maserati; probably around 1948. As soon as Henning got the Maserati (before WWII) he switched the fuel from gasoline to methanol and raised the gearing for more reliability. The supercharged engine was hand cranked to start and Henning was never able to get it to reliably start on methanol when cold. He ended up installing a small gravity feed gasoline filled can near the engine that he turned on just long enough to lite off the engine. One year when Shaw was on the front row he forgot to use the gas to start and there is film of the rest of the field going around Shaw before he finally got going. BTW, the other man in the photo is Ed Metzler who was Cotton Henning's right hand man at Boyle for several years. Metzler was the uncle of driver George Metzler who was killed at IMS on a Time Trial day in 1949.

    Happy Thanksgiving, Rootie!

Notice the flared wheel openings in the quarter panel to accommodate huge rubber.

Reminds me of my Dad, in the late 40’s he put together his race flathead for his roadster on the kitchen floor, no garage and raining.

  9. There were plenty of 'combustion engine racing cars' before 1909!

  11. The shot of the Mk1 Consul - the car has a permanent black plate issued in 1964. Surprising to see a car that old still in use. Maybe just about to be retired.

Even more surprising is the NZ Police choosing a "Gutless wonder" like a MK1 Consul.
Probably easier and less paperwork if the crooks could outrun them :D

Yep! It can only be a 53 or 54 and it looks like a fancy one!
