Jack Lufkin Bonneville corvette.jpg LB I have tried to find bits and pieces on the X car as you refer to it. I believe this picture was from 1964. The car was built for Bonneville as I understand. It was originally referred to as the Lufkin Jones Corvette and I have seen it referred to as the 1 car as the number it carried at Bonneville in 63. It was built be Jack Lufkin and Ak Miller out of a discarded 60 Corvette frame-the body is to resemble a 1962 Corvette although some may argue with the execution-I happen to like it. Frank Kurtis also worked on the car mainly responsible for the front axle and front suspension. It carried a fuel injected small block Chevrolet and stock Chevy rear with different gears depending on the distance etc. I believe it set some records in the 200mph range in 63 but I have read different accounts and not sure which is correct. As I understand the car returned to Bonneville in a different class in 64 and was now labelled X. Not sure of any records set that year. I believe I have another picture of it at Bonneville with X on the side but must have mis-filed it.

The car was sold to Doug Thorley (Doug's Headers) and was used for various records including on the dragstrip and was driven by a number of drivers including Terry Hedrick. I believe the car has survived although I am not sure where. You cannot argue though that the car was touched by a number of greats and deserves a place in Corvette lore for sure. Maybe more as a hot rod than a gasser but it is cool.

LB, I think this was the first go around for the Malco Vette. Shortly after this it was repainted in the flag style we mostly saw. I know some guys that worked on this car. A high school friend even traveled with Chris on the show and drag circuit. They won World of Wheels? championship about '69 or '70.

Sure can't miss the flake on this one. How did it lay down did you have to go heavy on the clear?

Not bad, we add the flake into clear then a final coat of clear, A ton of sanding to get it perfect, Now it will get a coat of urethane clear before the candies go on it.

The guy with the white jacket and glasses is Dick.

I would love to find a photo of the car with the words "The Yankee Cheater" in gold leaf on the top of the rear fenders that John Kurtzman painted back in the mid 60's early on a Saturday morning while I sat there watching him.

I believe Dick had spent the night sleeping on a pile of tires in a corner of the old shop which was called Performance Automotive on Canal Street in Stamford, Ct.

Not strictly a gasser as it was built in 2003 and spent 5 years on the car show circuit rather than the track. Injected big block with a four speed. Mecum auctioned it off in 2013.
