I built one for a friends 61 chevy used late 70s F150 axle cut drivers side tube to use short side after market 31 spline bronco axle came out 59.5".
I ended up with this rear end. We believe it has 3.50 ratio. Not sure if I got 28 or 31 spline yet. Got it off a parts car. Needs a little tlc. Edit: I was told it was off a Ford passenger car, possibly a ranchero. Measures 61” wheel to wheel mounting surface.
I am building a 9 inch for my Cameo, and just lucked into 3 31 spline 9 inch pumpkins. I needed a new pumpkin, because the one I am replacing is the 9 3/8ths unit out of a full sized Ford, and the gear ratio sucks out loud. They are still out there, but a little luck helps. Bob
The pictures above look like rear end came out of a pickup, springs are above the rear end. Id the bolt pattern 4-1/2" car, or larger?
It was off a gasser parts car I purchased. 5x4.5 bolt pattern. Roughly 61. Edit: I was thinking it was 31 spine by the looking at the top pic and the identification info I found on the internet.
I recently purchased a nice 9" ford rear end from Jeff in Aloha, OR that advertises on Portland CL. He just happened to be sitting on a 9" housing for a Maverick that the guy didn't come back for. approx. 57" WMS to WMS. He centered the pinion, added a brand new Yukon durigrip, 3:70 gears, torino bearings, hardened axles. He normally doesn't have a housing so if you find what you want he can build it for you. Works out of his house and knows his stuff! And he is in your backyard @Firedup I paid him a small deposit, took about a week to get the gears I requested and build it out. I paid more 20 years ago for a rear end this nice. I have his cell number if you are interested PM me.
Shortened 9" out of a '59 Ranch Wagon in my '31. Even came with a "N" case. Don't be afraid to go scrounging, it's half the fun!
For you Douglas, anything Axles were drilled for both 5 on 4 3/4 and 5 on 4 1/2. I will use this guy over and over! What a great find locally.
Thanks Bandit Billy. I was actually looking at that ad quite a bit. I was after the 61” rear end. Glad to hear he does nice work. I may give him a call eventually. In my backyard is a bonus.
I think what you have there is a 65 to 68 Econoline rear end. 9" with 3.50 gears, spring perches on top, 10" brakes, big bearings, and a 4.5" bolt pattern. It is the same rear as a 60 to 64 Full size Ford with the spring perches on top.
Could a guy flip that Econoline diffy over, unbolt and rotate the center section 180 degrees to get the perches on the bottom? You'd have to relocate the breather hole too.
Those look like ass . Run a stocker or slightly modified stocker........Olds would be good. I've only had 2 rear shortened by Currie and both times were a pain, between up selling (one rear had a bent tube so they said with no leaks or noise) or missing hardware (they never want to give back the T bolts, even though they wanted the rear end complete and bolted together). Next time, I'll use Cooks machine.
I found enough deviations from the "identify spline count by registration snout pattern" method, to render it meaningless.
