HRP, I'll never know how you continue to feed the HAMB with these brilliant philosophical ideas, then you find time to work on cars & share them... but I'm liking all this shoebox brainstorming.
To add to today's HRP thought:
Maybe this thread is changing from "HRPrimer" to 'Hot Rod Philosopher '.
I'm saving the Wizzard quote into my favorite Hamb quotes :
"All that's left now is to add the side trim I have had waiting on the side line. She tells me that every time I wash her up. It's like a Woman getting all dressed up and not adding her Lip Stick. Totally Weird, I know."
    The Wizzard
    Thanks

All my cars eventually told me what they wanted to be somewhere along the way as I fooled with them. Looks like yours is too.

I really like the looks of Rocky's shoebox. It's spot on.

Me too--sits right, looks right Had a friend who bought a mint 49 coupe in 60. promptly blew the flathead. His folks had it redone for him with a 57 Olds and a hydro-was a very nice car and fast for the time.

I was in the same place with my 50 Chevy. I think I'm going in the direction of a hot rod with a few minor body mods. Loud and fast is more fun than low and slow.

If I can ever get the right fuel tank sending unit and get the tank back in I'll be happy. HRP

Ditto on leaving it alone fer now - let the suspension get use to the new altitude

    I love these shoeboxes.
But prefer to see them as mild customs. Chopped with a slightly higher front end.
    Sounds like I’m outvoted.
Funny. Never cared for customs much in the 60-70’s.
But after seeing the early custom examples from this site, I realized I missed the best part.

My shoebox, originally built for gasser use..Lowered it about 44 years ago ['74] to around stock and a few things added over the years for creature [me] comfort..Raced it '75-'78..Custom grill emulating a '49, 95% of a '35 Ford bumper..Glass tilt nose, dropped beam axle with dual elliptical springs, engine set back 10%..Roll bar [because of glass nose] , radius rear wheel opening, 9'rear ['62 wagon], custom rear bumper emulating model A..Nosed and decked, dechromed [no side chrome] and rolled rear pan..Power steering and AC..Comfy foreign seats and a Radio with Casset player that absolutely refuses  to reverse........

I bought this chopped 50 sedan a few years ago. Gained an appreciation for an unchopped, mild custom. shuboxRockys.jpg

  24. Rocky, your old coupe made a big impact on me when I was thinking about purchasing my coupe.

Did you have the car before you joined the Hamb? HRP

  25. The shoebox Fords look good both hot rod and custom styles. Being that I like lowered on all of my vehicles, I agree that Rocky's old shoebox has the stance like I prefer. Yours just needs the rear lowered back down. You may need to tweak the tire size, or wheel offset, to fix your current rub issues.

  26. rockyboxmotor.jpg Yeah, I sold it in DesMoines at the good guys show in '93...I heard the buyer painted it bright red and put a blown hemi in it. Never saw it again.
Getting the car as low as mine required raising the trans hump, C-ing the body crossmember in front of the third member and I flipped the spindle supports, heated and bent the steering arms, cut the coils and used blocks in the back [maverick 8 inch axle] . I used a 1.25: trans-am front sway bar. That thing handled and steered like a slot car. Down side was you could put your foot on the front bumper and bounce the front cross member off the ground. Would sometimes scrape a bit on deep dips. Small price to pay to get it low.
I used the original 6 banger motor mount brackets with square tubing under them [boxed them after this photo] and got the engine to clear the drag link/tie rod by 5/8th inch...no dropped steering linkage needed.

I love the stance. But, IMO (weird as I am) nothing looks better on a shoebox than these:

IMO, 5 spokes were the catalyst for the shoebox to remove it from custom into hot rod.
It looks good as is but it needs caps to bring back to KustomVille

I have to do a rim change to get my desired caps to fit.
