Ryan cool post, and nice hotrod at least it will be- though he is online through you, and he will be tagged or photographed as the car is seen. I do hope more youngsters keep this thing going- there has to be a good balance of connected life with real world experiences and learning. I'm sure the car will be great if he follows the book. Maybe you can update us!
Ryan, if you read this and the young man wants a '35/6 drive shaft let me know. Like a couple others I too am shocked that someone his age knows what a library is and has the initiative to pursue knowledge of something he "saw on I35 one day". There's still hope...…. We often lament not enough youth share our older interests, and that won't change. But happily there are some and we should encourage them as much as we can, good on you.
But...if he doesn't use the internet or instagram, where the hell is he going to buy his wildly overpriced parts from?!
That's how any of my interest as a kid started. See something you like, ask a few questions and end up at the library for hours. I guess it can still work that way. I remember a guy that lived in our neighbourhood when I was a kid, he had a '55 F-100 with a Y-Block and a four speed, I would hear him daily round the corner and go through the gears. The sound was amazing! I would run down to "Mid-Town News" and grab up all the pickup magazines I could afford and drool over the '55s. Most guys even then wanted the '56 but I was in love with the '55. On my sixteenth birthday I bought a '60 F-100 because I had $500 burning a hole in my pocket and a new driver's license that needed to be exercised and five bills wasn't going to get the '55 for me. Never got the '55 but I have had a life long love of the "fridge"and Y-Blocks, just how things work out I guess.
I too used this book as my guide to understanding what parts to use/modify to build an authentic 40’s Hot Rod. When I found the book in a So Cal book store I knew then I could do it. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Wow-that car. Love the way the exhaust covers up the frame and suspension, And the color, and the louvers and on and on.
That was a refreshing story. The world has not completely gone to hell in a handbasket! I'd give anything to have a guy like that living next door.
Damn guys have a little faith.... I’ve said it on here before and I’ll say it again, I’m 18, all my hot rod friends are 17-21ish and only a few of us have social media and we are all very well aware of what a library is Occasionally, teenagers and hot rods still go together Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Gavin, I don't think anyone here doubts you. But I hope you understand what rare birds you and your friends are. In my circle of acquaintances, many people your age are still trying to decide whether or not they want to bother to get a driver's license.
What a great read Ryan. I too see a refreshed view of our youth. You made my day. Please keep us updated on his progress. I’m sure we’d all love to help him along.
I'm almost 7 in dog years .... getting my first Henry axle and assorted .... polished by Harv' on the HAMB and just purchased some 35/6 former Ford spare tire covers for my first set of cycle fenders .... where is my free sh#t at .... you stingy f#ckers ? It'll be years before I'm 18 in dog years .... maybe my hot rod will be done then ? More so ... hope I'm still breathing.
I'm 23 and one day, hopefully soon, I'll have a garage to build a Model A into a sweet little hot rod. Right now though its about finding the right space, not the right car, which seems somehow wrong to me. Still, I WILL build a hot rod and hopefully have help from some older guys like yourselves.
Now that's a great story. Yea, I am not familiar with young folks who have no cell phone and are not on Snapchat and Instagram. Cool.
I'm not much of a builder...a tinkerer yes...a lover of this Hamb Era vintage stuff...to the Bone... When I drive around and go to cruises and the odd show I am always hopeful that some of the younger crowd finds this scene with all the trimmings as exciting as we do...You are proof of that... It's great to see you guys and gals around...awesome... Pics or it didn't happen they say...work hard and save your dollars and your dreams can become realities...
Where the hell are the kids like that around me? Every kid my boss hires as a helper in the shop as an untrainable mess. All they care about is imported junk and social media. The other day I had an issue of Traditional Rod and Kulture on the lunch table and this 20yr old pot head says "what's this, some kind of old man magazine?" I'm only 32 and these kids make me feel like I'm from another planet. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
