Stogy, it's not a matter of hate on my part, I can dig the right flames on the right car if done
well. That being said, I wouldn't want to see a line-up of black '40 coupes with orange/yellow
flames at one show, or cars with odd colors. There are flame jobs that are way over the top and,
to me, the Watson flames are a prime example. Anyway, to each his own, if it works for you run
with it. Hey, I still dig '60s cars with fogged edges, webbing and panel painting.

When I first built my roadster ten years ago I painted it with flames. I still had my shop full time nd was doing quite a lot of flame work and thought that it would be nice to have something that customers could look at other than photos, so I added the flames in the photo. A. Few years back when doing flames became more work than I wanted to take on I decide to “remove “ them from my roadster . That my friends was a lot more work than originally painting them ,so after about six months of stripping, sanding, priming, block sanding and re-painting 90% of the car, its back to one color and a pinstripe on the reveals. When its all done, most people said that I should have left them but I kind of like it one color.

I have always loved flames, but like many styles, it's easy to do them wrong. When done right, they reference a time period, culture and attitude that is so unique -- it really speaks to me. Reminds me of Hot Wheels, Big Daddy Roth, and all the cool stuff from when I was a kid. That being said, I have had many hot rods over the years, and only a few have had flames. Currently have this roadster that was painted in 1974 with candy flames and black lacquer. Really like the look on this car:

Another flame job I liked was on this 51 Chevy rag top. Really made this car come alive - also worth noting that they were edged in green striping -- sounds sketchy I know, but looked awesome:

  7. I believe the long thin flames like the car Shamus posted are considered Ohio flames. Bobby Alloway, although not form Ohio, used them on a lot of his cars. I think the painter that first started painting that style was from Ohio.

Bill Roell & son did the flames on my coupe & a '40 Ford convertible owned by a friend (I bought the car from him). Believe he was the 1st to do this style for Bobby Alloway. Think he lives in Kentucky - not sure where the "Ohio" name came from.

  10. They are called Ohio flames because they were done by well known painter Wade Hughes and he was from Ohio.

I love someone on a traditional hot rod and custom site that says Flames have come and gone. I have news for you...everything on this site has come and gone, that is why we are here...to celebrate them. If flames speak to you, do it baby! Personally I love them. I have been drawing them on cars since I was 4 years old.

  15. I like flames on the right hot rod or bike, not so much on customs. I did my own traditional flames on my hot rod Harley that I can't show here and certainly have thought about putting them on my 41, I'm not a fan of the real fire stuff though. 12794383_10154037590718035_94283510457490613_n.png.jpg 10993091_942633859080071_6606355771179638702_n.jpg 11406518_1863209507237989_5909510926877221448_o.jpg Screenshot_20180411-211800_Google.jpg

Phil your work is beautiful...you have evolved with the movement as evidenced by that Ohio style flame and others which are applied to the more modern hotrods you have shown.

What I also see is other flames that harken back to the period we celebrate here and my take on this is you have done the walk, hold it close to your heart and still can pull the Traditional licks of the Yesteryear. Awesome...and I guess that's a thumbs up for the Flame...;)

One other thing is a taped up flamejob prior to paint is really cool in itself.

  26. One of these days I’m gonna get my nerve up and try them on something. Worse case scenario is you sand them back off and start again.
Might star with something safe like this though. Ha!

  27. Yes, that's the Tom McMullin roadster, he and wife drag raced, land speed raced and just plain drove around in this street roadster, I believe the roll bar was a bolt in unit.

I know the Roadster well...I just thought that the bar looks pretty modern considering the era which looks to be mid sixties. Not to mention looking a little like a brick shithouse.

I used to buy StreetRodder and he was the Big Cheese and yeah he really drove that Hotrod.

Flames do draw attention to a car , sometimes good sometimes bad but I still think flames are cool . I'm glad I flamed my car I just couldn't imagine it any other way .
