The pass. door is on and fits good. I had 1/8 " holes through the hinge to hold alignment; it worked great. IMG_1060 (600x800).jpg IMG_1063.JPG
    Progress!

I have the body cut up to 2000 and was buffing the drivers door when the Makita died. I tried to get it apart but failed. I am pretty sure it’s the switch or maybe a loose wire. So I bought a new one from Home Depot. They had the best price and 2 days shipping.
The plan was / is to get the painted stuff on the car so that I can paint the rear fenders. IMG_1064.JPG
Here is how it looks now.

After the buffer failure the other day, I installed the tank vent hose. A non-paint related project was needed. There is the same setup on the truck ( done by PO ) mounted with a zip tie.

With my brand new buffer, I finished the drivers door and my son helped install it. I buffed the deck lid today. IMG_1068.JPG IMG_1067.JPG

I got the the piece on the end of the hose from Summit and it's a vent/rollover valve. Since the tank is from Tanks, it has it's own rollover valve that also acts as a vent, which allows you to run a non vented cap. The only " tricky" thing is the vent hose needs to stay level or above the fitting on the tank. If there is a low spot, you might get fuel splashing into the vent hose and forming a liquid "trap".
I think the above scenario is not likely, but better safe than sorry. It is possible to over fill the tank until fuel rises into the filler pipe.

Thanks, it looks like it will be spring before I get to drive it.

Me too, Rocky, Me too. It will be 53 years in the spring since I drove it. Now I really feel old.:(

Joel, I'm just starting my build on my 8th 40 Ford. I don't think I can hold a candle to your work.
I just found your thread this week and enjoy every post, keep it coming.

Joel, when I was a bodyman/painter 20+ years ago we used Milwaukee buffers. I thought they were awesome. We replaced triggers on them so often I felt it was far too much. I bought a Makita in a pinch for my personal use almost 18 years ago. I’ve been waiting for the trigger to fail. Now I’m sure it will as soon as most inconvenient.
    Thanks, Wyatt

I guess it’s confession time. I couldn’t get the old Makita apart, although I was sure it was the cord. Long story short, a friend suggested I look on Utube for repair info. I did; there was; it was a bad cord. BTW I have had the first buffer since the mid 80s. I wouldn’t worry about the switch but they are still available.

  17. I've repaired the cord on 2 different Makitas I own. Well, shortened them up, to eliminate the break. Have owned them for 30 years+

You’re correct, Dick, although it even looks black to me sometimes.

Sorry Joel, for some reason I thought I read black somewhere, but looking at the pics, its obviously dark blue, and looks great.

No problem, I noticed that , after buffing , the “metallic “ is more prominent and the color is more blue.

  23. Great work! Out of curiosity, what are you using for buffing compounds/grits?

I use 3M compounds. I also use foam hook and loop pads. There are 3 different pads; one for each of the compounds. The pads are each a different foam( also different colors). IMG_1078.JPG

Looks good Joel! We just started the cut and buff on the Merc. It's gonna take us awhile like it has you but it will be worth it when we look at that smooth panels over the coming years.

Thanks, Sam. I hope I get it all done soon so I can start putting it back together. An upholstery guy is coming to look at the inside sometime this week, hopefully. The Merc looks good. Do both of you sand and buff or do you split it?

So far on this car we both sand and he buffs. I have been doing yard work and carpentry projects the last two days leaving him doing both. i need to get some things finished up on my shop expansion before it gets too cold. I have an acre of property here with lots of leafy trees. They keep me busy this time of year.
