I'm not at all trusting my insurance, State Farm. My agent talked me into "agreed value" but I'm told what SF considers AG is much different than what I think it is. The premium for a year was half of what Grundy or any of the other specialty insurers quoted so being as cheap as I am I went with them. I however had quite the run in with SF this summer on our travel trailer and now I damned sure don't trust them.
I don't recall this subject being discussed in the past, (it probably has), and thought I ask about who you guys insure with?

Hagerty! Would you go to a GP for heart surgery? Deal with a specialist, this is what they exist for. They don't do dailies, they don't do houses, just classic car insurance.

  5. i have SF on the house and the rest of the "fleet" and am happy with them.
when it came to the Classic there was something about them wanting me to carry the same levels of coverage as the other vehicles i have...(might be a MD thing) anyway, price was ridiculous...
so, i went with Hagerty… used them before on another OT car i had and was happy with the coverage and the price.
(got extended flatbed towing, spare parts coverage and a tool rider for less than half what SF to just cover the car)

  6. I know a car club member who was insured with State Farm... He got hit by a woman who pulled out of a mall driveway as he was passing it and clipped his passenger rear quarterpanel on his '65 Plymouth Fury right behind the wheel; it smeared the panel flat, wiping out the factory contours. The woman was also insured by State Farm. They jerked him around, refusing to replace the panel even after he found a good replacement. All they would pay for was a bondo job, leaving him with the option of suing his own insurance company, the results of which his lawyer didn't expect to get a good outcome. The car still isn't fixed....

I have SF for the house and daily's. Grundy for the collectors. I've had 2 claims with Grundy: glass and a paint issue. They paid both with no hassle. IDK how well SF would have handled the paint. Probably not as well since I had the estimate done by an actual rod shop (big $$$) whereas SF would probably want a regular body shop quote.

Good info. May look into changing on some of mine. As a side note, there used to be an underinsured motorist option. I don't think it is available any longer but if you have it you can keep it-well worth having.

I'v had Haggerty for 10+ yrs with no problems but no serious claims, only roll back service twice. I have an insurance certificate with the state of NC. I recommend a specialty company such as Haggerty or Grundy on old cars and go with an agent you can go eyeball to eyeball with. Insurance options will be clearer that way.....

  10. Underinsured or uninsured coverage is something they all try to sell you, but you do need to ask what it covers. Most used to cover both medical and property losses, but the property loss option has pretty much disappeared these days. Too many people were using it as a 'back door' way to get collision coverage without actually buying it.

I also have Hagerty for the hotrods only, State Farm has everything else...…...but I have, and always will have a AAA tow card in my wallet.
I have used AAA tow services maybe 6 times in 50 years and never a problem...….ever.

I use Collector Vehicle Insurance from American Modern Home Insurance Co. Coverages are stacked with my Nationwide daily coverages, so each one is 4x the stated cverage. It includes Uninsured Motorist/Underinsured Motorist.Agreed Value with Inflation Guards/Spare parts coverage/towing/trip interruption pet injury/death coverage. Have't had to put in a claim, but Nationwide has been great

Grundy For years myself, have 3 friends that had claims, 1 a total from garage fire, 2 others, 4/5 K range, NO problems paid out quick, No hassle, I highly recommend, but if you use your car/rod as a daily driver, Grundy is not for you. Note, I have used flatbed towing, they have a $250 cap

  14. That IS the downside, ALL my cars are daily drivers and not all are in a garage (1 is even parked on the street ).

I have Farmers with "Agreed Value" I haven't had to use it so we'll see. But I did have to send in a bunch of pics of all the cars and be honest with the value (no 50k pinto :)). It also wouldn't hurt to get an official appraisal every few years.

have had SF for a long time - had two claims over the years for classic rides - told me to take them to a shop that handles that type of car with special paint - no problem - local agent made sure that all was good

I would not trust State Farm for anything.
The "agreed value" is what you want, but you might want be be sure their "agreed value" doesn't reduce the value every year. What started out as a $10,000 agreed value policy was reduced to around a $7500 agreed value policy 3 years later, it was in the fine print! I caught that deal with a different insurance company before, if one pulls it, others might try it as well. Fortunately, there was no claim during that time. Gene

  19. I have my two oldies insured with AAA on an agreed value classic car policy. The coverage, price , and claim service are all outstanding. I also have my DDs's and home with them in a package deal which helps out on the price.

    Hagerty for me.
No claim but several rollback services that was courteous and fast.

  21. Another vote for Hagerty, have 3 "collector" cars on them, seems like the more cars you insure w/them in some cases the rates goes down, mine did, YMMV

  22. I tried Hagerty for my Roadster but they wouldnt insure it for road use...Said it looked too much like a race car and....get this...it didnt have a windshield wiper. I'm dead serious. That's what the guy said. Anyway, All I have is Geico liability to make it NC legal.

I have had Hagerty for longer than I can remember and, unfortunately, I have had 2 major claims. In both instances they ponied up.

My 54 Chevrolet incurred a bill of almost 22k because it had to be repainted from the beltline down plus lots of front end sheet metal repair, including the hard to find splash guard. They let me choose the shop, as well and she came out better than before the wreck.

My 63 Porsche was totaled and they offered to pay promptly. I asked them to let me negotiate with the other driver's insurance company for a couple of weeks just to see how it went. Nationwide sent out an expert "Classic Car appraiser" and they offered me about 2/3 what it was insured for. I called Hagerty back and they wrote me a check for the agreed value.

I would never have my classic cars insured by the same one I use for late model cars. Never. Even my Nationwide agent now carries Hagerty.

SF here - Three claims on my OT 65 Mustang when I daily drove it. One was ice and wind and I wound up in the ditch. Broke the driver seat, dented the RR quarter panel, and shredded a tire. No hassle with any of it except the seat - it HAD to be a stock replacement according to the adjuster, so they ended up buying one off a "certified vendor" on ebay or some BS when I had a spare in the garage...

2nd time totaled it from "debris in road" which is apparently what you call it when a concrete trucking company is negligent with maintenance and their truck loses an axle in the middle of the highway. My choice of shop, etc, and it was repaired fine, though not with the quality of parts I would have used, because again "certified vendor" but for sheet metal apparently that just means "new."

    3rd time no help.

Thanks to all that gave input. Going to look closer into SF before moving to Hagerty or Grundy.

I have 7 of my '34's insured with Hagerty.
I had Sneed Robinson and Gerber (The old NSRA broker) before they sold to Chrome.
Their prices lept increasing and their service dropped.
I have a friend who has Hagerty and loves them.
He had a claim from a blown tire which cause 12,000 in damage and they paid it immediately.
I went with Hagerty and have added more cars to the policy as I finish them.
They now have a "cherished policy" that allows you to keep the car if it is totalled for a small amount extra.
The cost for all my cars is only a little more than the cost of insurance for my Silverado.
Sereral locals have used Hagerty as well and made claims with no problems, quick settlement, and great customer service.

STAY AWAY FROM SHELTER INSURANCE...I had an agreed value policy and when push came to shove they said that was the maximum amount they agreed to pay not the minimum. Stay with one of the specialty insurance groups that understand classics etc.

    I'm a bit confused here:
I have Grundy Insurance on both of my cars. I have Agreed Value on both cars.
It is my understanding that when we "Agree" on a price, that in the event of a
"total loss", I get the agreed amount. Is this not correct?
How can an Insurance Co change this? Or, am I not thinking this thru clearly?
    Thanks
    Jim
