How I wish I'd held onto all the Pontiac sales brochures my dad would pick up at the
Chicago Auto Show in the early '60s, possibly including 1959. That style of artwork,
like the cars themselves, seems to be long gone. These examples that Deuces has posted are a
great trip down memory lane. You even have to dig the wagons!

Jim Miles 1934 Ford Altered Coupe from 1959

    Hello,

In 1959, we were teenagers on a mission. The biggest drag race in history was going to happen at the Riverside Raceway at the end of December. All of the biggest names in the West were going against the race cars from the East in a big match up. So, we had to see this one since we missed the first Smokers March Meet in Bakersfield.

It is about a 1.5 hour drive from the Westside of Long Beach. We wanted to get there for the opening gate on that race day, so we had to leave very early. We had driven through Riverside many times visiting my dad’s friends in Palm Springs and Indio. We also had gone through the city of Riverside to one of our favorite places, cherry picking in Beaumont,CA , just a few minutes east.

So, this crisp morning in December was the start of our “outside of Lions Dragstrip” adventure. We arrived and immediately started walking around the pits. This is where we found one of the hot Altered Coupes from Long Beach, the red, Rasner/Reath/McEwen Fiat to start off the morning.

Nearby in the pits was another Altered Coupe, the red 1934 Ford three window coupe of Jim Miles. One of the friends, we went with, had a black 5 window 34 with a big Olds motor in it for the Gas Coupe and Sedan Class. This red 34 was a 3 window with all of the stuff for the Altered Class. We were impressed with both Altered Coupes, the red Fiat Coupe and the red 34 Ford Coupe.

For some reason, the red 34 stuck out as a look we would like to have for a street driven car, but this one was a full race, drag racing coupe.

This big race day was very exciting and quite a long event. Needless to say, filming from all over the track was a ton of fun for this teenager. There weren’t too many barriers, so getting close to the action was possible, including the final top eliminator race, very late in the day.

    controversy at the start…
