Hope this isn't the wrong place to ask the question.

I presume the same applies in the US. At any hot rod/classic car show/beach hop here in NZ the rock and roll girls are always heavily tattooed - why? What do tattooed girls have to do with the 1950s? Have I missed something?

 

It's the idea that young "hot rodders" have that 50's women had tattoos, looked like Betty Page.
That guys all had greased hair, undershirts with rolled up cuffs.
This is millennials ideas of the 50's, tied up in the rust bucket / rat rod crowd.

I think what you are missing is that tats are popular now. And those pictures are being taken now. So those girls have ink. Has nothing to do with the fiftys. I had long hair in 70. Long hair went out and I got a hair cut. those girls are going to be kinda stuck when tats go out of style.
