Thanks, if done right the grill will look right. I hope the car turns out, I can see it in my head, but I have a long way to go.

 

I read this car used Chevy AD truck front fender headlight surrounds to move the headlight outward to clear the Plymouth grill. In my opinion it's one of the best uses of the grill in a fat ford.

The Mayflower grill takes a lot to get over --- it being just that. Especially to someone who grew up with a Plymouth being an Old Maid teacher's car. Those they'd been driving since graduating from the Teachers College, parked in the parking lot beside all the other Old Maids Fords, Buicks and Chevrolets. However, since I'm building a Forty Eight Coupe I have to admit it's not a bad choice; considering some of the other junkey grills that were made 'back when: such as a forties Oldsmobile or Cadillac grill used in one of the Barris Creations. And, I confess, faced with that much rust repair I would be tempted to replace the back of the two-door with a donation from an early Aero- Chevy, chopped it and slammed, and called it done. Though, you gotta love 'Verts. Keep on keeping on, and Godspeed.

 

Happy New Year everyone. It has been a long time since I’ve posted an update, only because it has been a long time since I’ve been able to be at the shop to get any work done. It felt good to spend a few hours working on this thing again.
I spent some time cutting my floor donor car down further and have it really close to joining the convertible cowl and rear section to it. I also removed the outer rocker panels and will replace those as I reassemble the convertible body. I am glad I stripped the cars down this far as it will be fixed the right way now.

Hopefully it’s not another 6 months before I get to do more work on it.

Got a little more work done thanks to some good help.
Removed the floor from the Tudor and put it on the convertible frame so I can get the Tudor chassis out of my way. The Tudor floor is pretty nice. Only a couple places to patch.
I also finished welding in the patches on the cowl and had my little helper POR15 the underside of the cowl that will get covered by the rockers and she spread it everywhere else she could reach.




Great attention to detail. Using the light to make sure she got good coverage.

Next weekend, hopefully some work on the inner rockers.

 

The original cowl rockers were so rusty the cowl support brackets were were beyond use. There is support bracket between the inner and outer rockers were rusty beyond use and are convertible specific, so I whipped up a new set.




I am just doing some final fit up on the outer rockers before I weld them in. Thanks to Natty she got the cowl ready for the new rockers.

 

Didn’t get to spend much time in the shop today before baseball practice.
Sam helped me put the cowl back on the frame.
Laying out the 6 pieces of inner and outer rocker panels (per side). If I get shop time tomorrow I’ll start welding in the inners.

 

how are your rockers rotted out, but not your floors

 

This floor is from a different car. But they were still pretty bad. The space between the inner and outer was full of dirt. When attempting to remove the running boards, the cage nuts ripped out from the rockers and tore big holes. They were week.

The door is always open, when I’m there.

I didn’t get back out there Sunday (got stuck doing honey-do’s) so no more progress.

 

fun fact, the convertible covered in poo was a hard top. george barris chopped off the top. the hero car was a real convertible

 

Inner rocker on the passenger side is partially welded in.

 

While the west coast is having a blast at TROG Santa Barbara, I was welding on the inner rockers.

 

Looking good. You certainly keep focused, and headed in one direction when your in the shop.
I would be walking around in circles checking out all the yummy candy in there, getting absolutely nothing done! Keep moving forward, and thanks for taking us along.

 

It’s tough to stay focused, I really want to work on my ‘32 coupe. As soon as I get the body back in one piece I think I may work both cars.

 

Test fitting the outer rockers before I weld in place. These rockers were made to scab them in place without taking the body as far apart as I did. I am trying to make it look like they were never replaced. Once I tack the rockers in place to the cowl I will lift it back off and weld them on the inside and weld them to the cowl outer rocker. When I’m done, you’ll never know it had this much surgery.

Fitting the rear section of the convertible body to the Tudor floor and rear inner fenders. I wanted to set the body on the frame to check door gap before permanently welding the cowl to the rockers and floor.

This is how I move stuff around since I am a one man shop.


It fits decent. The Tudor inner fenders must have relaxed a bit, but nothing I can’t close up.


The rear will come off/on again several more times.
After putting the rear body on I am convinced this was the only way to fix this rusty girl.

Is your daughter going to apply Por 15 to the inner rockers before final welding?

 

If I can bribe her with candy again.
The inside of the inner and outer rockers will get painted before I weld everything together.

 

Hung both doors just to make sure the gaps are good before I weld the rockers to cowl. Time to weld the rocker to cowl and then pull it all back apart again.
