Wow, this photo brings back memories for me. I remember that little roadster. This is 1965 at the Salt Flats, this was our "pit area". I recognize some of our crew in this photo, Nye Frank (our Crew Chief) in the jacket with his elbow on the trailer, Paul Nicolini facing the camera, working on something near the top of the jet engine, I think that the guy kneeling inside the trailer is Connie Swingle, the heavy set guy in the jacket facing Paul was Wayne Ewing, and the guy in the white T-Shirt standing next to Wayne is me. I can't recall the name of the guy seated on the stool in the pith helmet, but I know he was repacking the wheel bearings with our "secret" grease, from Shell. Although I can't tell for sure, I think the semi-bald guy on the right with his hands in his pocket was Bob Koken, on loan to us from General Electric to oversee any work on the J-79 engine. The two 5' tall "boxes" standing on end near the rear of the trailer are the dual aluminum parachute containers ('chutes were made by Jack Carter), which are normally mounted at the rear of the jet car along side of the after burner.

Anyone interested in reading about the LSR record attempts with the Spirit of America, Sonic 1, in 1965 should read Sam Hawley's new book, "Ultimate Speed" (available through Amazon), the life of Craig Breedlove.

George, thanks for that information. I really appreciate the history of these old pictures, it's good to hear the stories behind the photo. I have filled in the blanks on a few, as had others to some of the photo's posted it makes it all that more interesting. Posting photo's is good, adding information about them, priceless.

The car was restyled by Jim Street, originator of the legendary "Golden Sahara".
Both were sold at auction upon his death.
P.S. The white pearl paint job was by none other than Larry Watson.
