That's not accurate. There is a smoothing of the flow of air that occurs with an air cleaner housing that increases the flow of air into the throat of the carb. A large air cleaner provides a better reservoir of calmed air, and one with a base that turns gracefully will outflow no air cleaner at all.

  4. I've always managed to find a combo that would work without chopping a hole in my hood. I do have an OT car that I bought a big block hood for but have never needed the clearance. I do like the look of some scoops on some cars though. The thought of cutting a hole or even drilling holes in an old hard to find hood is what stops me from doing it.

I wouldn't have one if I didn't have to let the hood close. Mines a bolt on, I'm not super concerned with body work and making it all nice. I just wanted to close the hood. This is the only pic I could find that showed it very well. FB_IMG_1521479217086.jpg

The paint roller tray really happens. I remember a 62 Chevy 4 door coming into the gas station I worked at, a looong time ago. Unpainted, and the kid driving it was as proud as a puppy with two peters.

On a serious note I really do like functional scoops, being a drag racer, scoops are always used to ram in fresh cool air. But even drag cars can have some really ugly scoops, function over form is the rule there.
Just a couple scoops I have and use, all a little bit different, to ram that cool air down the throat of those carbs ! 20180928_104020.jpg 20180928_104302.jpg

I tried several scoops on my 40, but didn't seem to find one that looked right. I do not think I will need one, but I have only had short deck bbc with shorter intake on it so far, 10.2 deck going in with a pretty tall intake. It's in my paint shop now, without a scoop.
P.S. my paint shop is also my fab shop, engine shop, car storage and junk collection space.

  15. Yes, it's as ugly now as it was then...

This is the "dump truck" scoop I have on my Henry J. I cut a hole in the hood so it is functional, but it doesn't kill many bugs so it's probably not catching a lot of air. As far as rain, my '36 Ford pickup in the back ground and I have driven right into a downpour and it never skipped a beat, even with the open scoop and a windowed, points distributor cap.

If you haven't done the math to calculate scoop position and sizing, then run it through CAD or a real flow bench and air tunnel to maximize the design for optimum performance, you're a poser.

Any less than a 9 sec car should have a drive in tray and a plastic burger and fries on display!

The Thread is fine, it's an opinion thread and that's my opinion, IMO, hood scoops belong on race cars only, not some Hot Rod, Street Rod or Kustom. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one, my opinion and $2. gets me a coffee where I eat breakfast. Everyone, Have a Great Day !:D

Those look hideous, I think if you make them functional then that is one thing, But on old junk Louvers are the answer.
