    Hello,

One of my favorite Studebaker cars is the first one I saw at Lions Dragstrip. It was black, looked like it just drove in the main gate, popped the hubcaps and blasted down the dragstrip. It also had a whine to the motor sound like no other car. Plus, it was fast. This 1941 black Studebaker was one fast car for the popular street legal classes. The Gas Coupe and Sedan classes as it was historically known.

When we were racing the 58 Impala at Lions, Jr. Thompson’s Studebaker was usually there. He won a lot of B/Gas races, even the old 4 across races, too. Some Saturdays, there were so many cars in one class that during eliminations, 4 cars took up the whole dragstrip for their races. Put a 283 in a lightweight Ford Coupe: B/Gas. The 4 across was usually in C/Gas and/or B/Gas.

The Studebaker 4 door sedan started the historic run of Junior Thompson throughout his illustrious career. The whole scheme of things is explained at jrthompson.net. Our involvement was trying to get speed secrets from this fast Studebaker sedan. Everything about it was pretty spectacular. The takeoff at the starting line was a show of power.

Upon seeing the “go” sign, the front end of the big Studebaker sedan rose up and the whole sedan looked like it was shot out of a cannon. That quickness usually was enough to win many trophies in these gas classes. First, it was in C/Gas, then B/Gas with this big sedan.

The sight was a big Studebaker sedan sitting level in the pits, but when the green light flashed at the starting line, the front end rose up in the air. With each shift, the car rose upwards again. It was one well-built sedan for the consistent wins in the Gas Coupe and Sedan Classes.

Here is Junior Thompson racing another Studebaker sedan in 1959-60, Al Hirshfield and the Howard Cam Special. Isky vs Howard Cams in the ads.

FatASS I'm not arguing with you BUTT it looks like the 6 cyl. tri-power on the car, I can't really see but if it was a V8 with trips wouldn't the hood have to modified to clear the carbs and air cleaners and I don't see any scoop or holes in that hood. Now I can't see so well anyway so maybe someone else will give a good look here.

FatASS I got the telescope out and I see the Vee and a distributer (I think) plus no 6cyl valve cover. I wonder what year it was, must have been one of the first tri-power manifolds made.

I'm intrigued to see what appear to be chrome headlamp trims on the T-Birds. I have a 57 that had chrome trims back in the day. They weren't factory, I guess they were done individually by owners or maybe by a dealer on request.

Mart I think J.C. Whitney sold all that type of stuff back in the day. And they are still in business today.

There are 2 57 Mopars farther up the photo so it's a least a gathering in 57 ....I'd guess later so that 3-2 set up was out for a time. Looks like he kept the radio by the dist cover.

The first attached photo is of the great Gus Schrader. I'm guessing the photo would have been taken around 1940.

And the second photo from 1963 shows Roger McCluskey's wrecked Konstant Hot Watson roadster. Note the fiberglass nose. Unlike the other roadster builders A.J. Watson embraced fiberglass early on. He stated that only his first roadster for Flaherty had a aluminum tail before pulling a mould and switching to glass. And around 1960 he started making the noses from fiberglass as well. As near as I can tell all of the other builders like Kuzma, Lesovsky, Trevis, Epperly, Ewing, etc. stuck with formed aluminum tails and noses.
