This is a Moriarty picture from show coverage, thought it was a good start on an Olds-Camino.

    Hey E,
For inclusion on the El Camino thread: "as requested…" Thanks for watching the You Tube film.

During the 1958-early 1960 era, we were racing our 58 impala in the A/Stock class at Lions Dragstrip. This brown 1959 El Camino was impressive sitting in the Lions Pits area. It looked stock from the outside, but when the owner raised the hood, everyone stood back and admired the big change. It was not stock!
upload_2018-10-7_4-55-12.png The motor in the 1959 El Camino was a big Cadillac motor, a 471 supercharger with a v-belt drive.

Here are some insights into the identification and acknowledgment of the surprise of the Gas Coupe and Sedan class from older HAMB posts…Thanks YD and FG.

Here is a short film that I just happened to take back in the 1959-60 era at Lions. The odd thing that was impressive were the controls inside of the El Camino. There was a lever for the accelerator and brake. We had seen these before being used as handicapped assisted devices. It is hard enough to drive on the street, let alone drive using the steering wheel and the hand levers to go and stop. The El Camino also had an early version of the latest Stick Hydro transmissions, not the stock Powerglide.

Actually, for the drags and even on the road, the reaction times would be shorter from the brain to the hands. In our old college statistics class and other lab classes, I remember being timed when viewing an object to foot reaction for the brake pedal. It was +-2 seconds. The hand reaction for that time was less. So, maybe that was an advantage at Lions.

While planning the design for my 56 ElCamino build, I spent a lot of time researching and looking at designs others used for these type of conversions and always found that the rear window design can either make or break the conversion. This one certainly makes the car. Not sure if it could be a 59/60 window or a curved glass from something else that is the right width. I have a friend doing a 57 conversion using a 59 top which is noticeably wider than the 57. He had to narrow the top and was unable to recut the curved back window to fit. I do see some similarity with designs I used on my 56 2door Wagon to ElCamino conversion. The length and type of the doors and the angle of the tailgate suggests this may have originally been a 2door wagon. Like mine the door posts have been angled which in my opinion gives the lines of a car a nice flow. I chose an early 70's rear glass and stainless trim on mine. The goal was to give the build kind of a factory look. This 57 also has a nice factory built look. It would be great if anyone could share more pictures of the car. Whoever built it, nice job.

  20. I bought a black '64 El Camino that was in beautiful shape and I had big plans for it but the fickle finger of fate saw it different, on my way to work a teenage girl in a Buick Electra ran a stop sign and T boned me in the passenger side door, the poor old El Camino was totaled, one week to the day and it was trashed.
