    Hello,

It was a toss up as to which Dragliner was going to be drawn. The black and white (most of the early drag racing photos) or the newly re created SBC gold version. It is hard to get the correct gold color on paper, so it was the black and white, Flathead version from 1956.

My brother and I started drag racing early on in 1957. We read all of the magazines (hot rod and custom ones). We even went to the local speed shops to get our weekly fill of what is happening in the world of drag racing. We had our favorites, but the one that we did not see, but talked about a lot, was the Dragliner from the shop of Dode Martin and Jim Nelson. It looked like a true Bonneville racer that was fast enough to win races at the drags. It was the design and of course, the Moon Discs did the trick.

It was unfortunate that we never saw the original Dragliner in person, but we followed the Dragmaster Team with their new open chassis, front mounted 671, SBC, all over the So Cal races. It helped that they were constantly at Lions Dragstrip during the times we spent every weekend from 1958-60 at that home away from home. They were no longer in the lower C/D class, but now racing against the top teams in So Cal. We saw them and the Lion’s starter more than our dad and mom.

Here is a little history on the Dragliner.

“As word spread, we started getting help from several manufacturers who were making names in the drag racing business, including Racer Brown, Bell Auto Parts, Vic Edelbrock, Sr, and some of the other racing guys in Los Angeles. We did not have many manufacturers down south, so we had to come up to Los Angeles to get the latest parts and pieces. I named the car the Dragliner, but it was not a fuel burning dragster.”

It was a 2 hour, one way trip to Lions Dragstrip from Carlsbad, weekly. It was drag racing dedication, for sure.

    Hey Ron,
That is a very nice model. It reminds me of the early streamlined body style of Bobby Langley from Texas and Calvin Rice, the first winner of the Nationals.

The early pioneers were a little crazy, but their designs were meant to go faster than other cars of the time. It must have been those favorites of mine, the Moon Discs.

Found another sketch that I've done on my phone with an app called Paperdraw. It's not the best app, and combination of butterfingers and a small screen smartphone means this took way many more hours than it would have on paper, but at least I have something to do when I'm stuck somewhere without paper or pens.

My friend Bob painted it and my daughter-in-law made the stickers that I designed. We will give it away at the Fremont Ne. fall swap meet this Sunday Sept. 23 rd. Hope the new owner likes it. Gary IMG_2186.JPG IMG_2188.JPG IMG_2190.JPG
