upload_2018-9-15_3-24-0.png staging lanes at Lions Dragstrip 1959-60 era
    Hello,

Between the early opening days of Lions Dragstrip in 1955 to the photo in 1959 or 60, the stock classes were some of the most popular classes. The old adage of “run what you brought…” (ghetto language: brung) kept the a lot of the cars off of the streets. It was simple, pop the hubcaps, clean out the trunk, take out the jack and spare, race in your class. For little money, it was a great example of "hot rod fun" any driver/spectator could have on a Saturday night.

Look at the variety of cars racing from 55-60 Doug Cook 37 Chevy and Charlie Ettien’s Hemi Ford truck cars in the Gas Coupes and Sedan Classes to a 52 Chevy/Olds sedan and a lowered 50 Chevy sedan in the various stock or lower Gas Coupes and Sedan classes. Just go racing… then, drive home with a trophy…after having lots of fun.

There was even a black 58 Chevy Impala trying to win those cool trophies in the A/Stock class, against our nemesis… as captured by another avid photographer back in 1959. From a You Tube posting of an early Lions Dragstrip film.

“DRIVE THE HIGHWAYS, RACE AT LIONS…” was the motto that pushed the Lions Club to secure the land for those 1955-72 years. It was the mantra to get the land to create the Dragstrip. The local gendarmes wanted to get those “hooligans, teenagers, mom and pops, off of the streets and on to legal class racing for factory cars/hot rods. This was before the land values/rental income became higher due to the economy.

Great memories from a great place 1955-1972.
