Find a decent extended stay unit that is for short duration stay while you look around for more suitable place for residence.
Then when you find a place you like at a cost you can afford, before you sign a lease, make it a point to do a few drive bys late at night and on the weekend to see if there are any problems you didn't see on your first visit. You don't wanta be in a neighborhood where you've got pushers, pimps, and prostitutes hanging out when the sun goes down!

DUDE, Escondido is Mini Mexico in my opinion, yes we have Cruising Grand but it is known as one of the crummy areas of North county.

I recommend finding a place that will have a room in a house that will let you pay $800-$1200 for a room. my friends stay in a $5M mansion and pay $1400 per month. there are 5 rooms and everyone pays $1000+ but they have views of ocean, roof balcony to see the bay, etc... better than paying for your own small rental that is trully a box in a box.

better yet, dont take the job here, stay where you are, find a hot rod shop closer to you and keep most the money you make. California is full, if I made the money I make here, I would have a HUGE house and a HUGE property, but I live here and probably will never own a home due to the high prices of a condo even.

When you get to the beach, good luck finding a parking spot. SoCal is wall to wall people. I’ve lived here all my life 74 years and the place has turned into a shit hole. Moving to AZ

More old, and unsuccessful people bashing California.

    Big fun.

    Time to close this thread.

See, there's another one. I'm not making this shit up. Why move to a place people who have lived here for decades are getting the f out?

Just for your information I might be old but I am not unsuccessful. I live a mile from the beach on a hill in a beautiful home over looking the ocean in Carlsbad. I’m just done with this unAmerican state.

The funny part of this, during the summer, it's the Zonies that are taking all those parking spots at the beach! San Diego's unofficial start of summer begins the day after Labor Day, when all those Zonies head back to their toasty desert homes ...

Before you decide on a place to live call a local pizza place that delivers and see if they deliver to the neighborhood you're considering. If they don't there is a reason so look elsewhere for a place to live.

I manage a business in Kansas City, KS and a much smaller one in Barstow, CA. All I can say is my cost of doing business is much higher in Cali than in KC. Annual expenses run higher than the KC facility and KC is literally 4 times larger, size and volume. I have better luck with the technicians I hire in KC.
However, I have made alot of great friends out there in the CA desert. They love the freedom we have in Kansas with our hot rods and no inspections. They also freak out when they come to KC, feel trapped cause they can't see 20 miles down the road, too many trees and hills for the Barstow guys. I have spent alot of time in socal, SD, LA and yes, Barstow. Barstow is known as a shithole, but after doing business there for 25+ years, I'd rather be there than the other cities I have visited in Cali. I'll admit, I am a farm raised red neck hot roddin county boy.
I happy to see some defending CA, it's your home. Personally, I couldn't do it, and expect you would not like my life style in the hills of eastern KS. It does feel worlds apart.

It's not politics, it's people relaying vital information to someone looking to move this way, and other people getting offended by that and making personal attacks. When you have people that have lived here for decades looking to leave, that should tell you something. Ignoring it and pretending it doesn't exist doesn't help. For the sake of this thread, it serves to let the OP know what he's getting into.

Please leave California ASAP. With your ignorant understanding you're not a good fit for open-minded, forward thinking California.

It does tell me something, but nothing close to your interpretation.

You ever met a friendly person ranting about leaving California? me either.

I'm not ignoring anything. I was born and raised here. Same with my entire family (brothers, sister), my wife and her family. And we're not looking to move. We wouldn't want to live anywhere else. There's good and bad in every state. But I happen to like the diversity - in terrain and people - in CA. Also, I was referring to the "wetbacks" comment earlier....that kind of shit's not needed.

Just wow.........................Some of you have either not understood or failed to comprehend that this for me is more than just about money and how much monthly rent is.I do feel that the spirit and indented purpose of this thread has gone off the rails. This is also why I don't go to car shows or cruises any more.FWIW being alone with my cars and house is worse in my mind with no change in sight than the cost of CA living.

I was born and raised here! I live in so-cal. I know the cost of living and politics are crazy. I do like the fact I can drive an hour or two and be at the beach, mountains, or desert. I can also drive about 4 or 5 hours and go to vegas or the river. I like the weather here too. I like the diversity of food and people here. You can also find something car related to do almost every weekend. Good Luck with your decision. I wish you well.

Do it. You won't regret it. If you miss the snow, you can go to Big Bear or Mammoth in the winter. The post-war hot rod scene originated in SoCal. And like others have posted, there's something hot rod related going on just about every weekend.

I would agree with that. I think it came out of frustration because somebody called the guy old and unsuccessful, another guy labeled non-local visitors to the area with a pejorative. Still, nothing was political. It may be people disagreeing in their perceptions of the state of the state, but it isn't political. On my part, I tried to back up my points with facts. I don't think I argued with anyone or insulted or made derogatory comments toward anyone.

I agree with you Blues, sometimes people can get a little intense in their replies. But one poster did get political with this:
“….this november election will show how fed up Californians are with this Democrat ran state that keeps taxing us to death. so good luck. Merica.”

That being said, I still think hemiwheelstand would like it here.

OK, so I posted some negatives, but to be fair, the state has a lot of positive things going for it. Here's a few:

    1. Weather – the best weather anywhere in the country

    2. Geography – you can find just about every kind of terrain and climate zone here, from ocean front to mountain top to desert. What's more is you can get from one zone to the others with a short drive. It's true that you can surf in the ocean, water ski on a lake and snow ski in the mountains all in 1 day. And people do it. It's a long day, and you'll be dead tired, but you can do it.

    3. Hot rodding – lot's and lot's of great hot rod shops and hot rodding events, lot's of fellow hot rodders to share your passion with. Lot's of events, there is something going on somewhere every week, multiple cruise nights every week.

    4. California Girls – the Beach Boy's ode to the beautiful fun girls of California still rings true. Important stuff for a single man

    5. Roads – some of the best roads for recreational driving in the country, some well known, i.e. Mulholland Hwy or Angeles Crest Hwy, and some less known or unknown except to the locals, but still great roads with sweeping curves and tight switchbacks, and incredible vistas. In the N San Diego Co area, check out Palomar Mtn Rd, then head on over the back side and cruise out to Julian for some apple pie. There are a thousand more roads like this in the state.

    6. Fabulous freeway system – freeways were invented here and we have the best

    7. Beaches – some of the best beaches in the world, in both northern and southern Cal.

    8. Nightlife – incredible amount of nightlife activity, and a wide variety of entertainment, from local bars to night clubs, concert houses, and amusement parks. If you're lonely here it's because you want to be.

    9. Good people – lot's of people here, the most in the nation. And many (most?) of them are really good people. Even if they look different than you, and maybe speak a different language, they are still good people, all you need to do is get to know them, and all that takes is being friendly.

    10. Access to goods and services – from staple items like groceries to exotic stores with imported goods, auto parts, sporting goods, you name it. For just about anything you want you don't have to order it online, you can drive down to a store and pick it up. And our fresh fruits and vegetables are incredible, as is our meats and dairy products. Seriously, this state has excellent access to just about anything you can think of.

    11. Restaurants – A foodie's paradise, especially San Francisco. In San Diego area you can find some of the best genuine Mexican food anywhere outside of Mexico. I'm not talking about fake Mexican food, like Taco Bell, I'm talking about the real stuff, made by people from Mexico who make it just like they made it back home. But it's not just Mexican food, a benefit of all the immigration to this state is the wide variety of foods available here. Like I said, a foodie's paradise.

I second the foodie thing....lots of it here. Also, Tommy's. I think they're in SD county now IIRC. Everybody talks about In & Out, but Tommy's is it...for me, anyway.

Man I’m telling you ... I been in your exact shoes so cal didn’t fix anything, just had no time to think about my woes , didn’t fix my problems just created new ones

Some of the negativity on here is because of people’s personal experiences you can’t make fun of them for telling you life ain’t all Rosie out here just like Hollywood , every success story has fa few people that failed... and some are perfectly happy doing porn too

Some of the posters here obviously just don’t know, I wouldn’t even think of an area that had cheap rent in Escondido and Temecula commute to esco can take up to 2 hrs to get home, Ramona is a terrible idea too drive that one first you’ll see why ... look south or west of Escondido for living VC and fallbrook maybe an ok commute with side roads

Hrcs is the upper pay for most esco shops and if they pay you 30 your one of the few, it ain’t all about money but that’s what creates your lifestyle and under 20 an hr in SoCal will really fuck up your perspective here after awhile ... even if you do get to watch awesome sunsets great beaches and bikini girls

I wonder how many folks are unaware that California used to be called Alta California de Mexico, before it was part of the US (and was that LONGER than it has been part of the US), and was the Northern Territory of the Mexican Empire, long before the Europeans landed.

The folks some of you believe don't belong here, are living where their families and ancestors lived, for upwards of 8,000-10,000 years.

Their people didn't move here, yours did.

I am a very logical, practical, all be it out side the box thinker. What I will be making for money is I know paramount to the entire endeavor. My business and what was talked about at length with my potential boss is info I will not give out.But I will say that it is at the top of what he starts new employees out at and that number can definitely go up with reviews and the like. So lets just say that with my current life style I can do 1,100ish to 1,600ish on the high side monthly for rent. And lets remember that I am still young and single so living arrangements can and most definitely will change.
