Rootie, thanks for posting this great shot of Ted Horn's big car at Dayton in 1948 (or maybe 1947). Horn only ran the Midwest high banked tracks a few times but never lost a race. He ran at Salem once and won. He ran at Dayton three times and won each time. And he only ran Winchester once as well. I don't know about the other tracks but I've talked to old timers who were at Winchester when Horn signed in and the other drivers (who apparently didn't even know Horn was coming as he mostly ran in the east) immediately felt like they were running for second place. Horn set fast time, won his heat, and won the feature as well that day.

  25. I wonder if she used a wire coat hanger when she locked her keys in the car.

Did she lock her keys in the car often?

I carry 2 sets of keys for my daily F150 ever since I locked the keys in it in town one day and had to pay to get in it. Last week I took my elderly Mom to the doctor up in Des Moines. I was so nervous by the time I got there that I locked the keys in our Impala that my wife drives. Fortunately my wife was with me and she had her keys. I have to take Mom up to the doctor this week but I'm taking the Caprice, I can get into it if I lock the keys in.

@Gary Reynolds and @loudbang ... thanks for the info on Jim Lytle's Big Al; interesting history of the car. Since I live only an hour away from Big Daddy's museum, I'll have to check it out.
