Checking in too! I have a little more than 300 miles on the new motor. It is running awesome. I am happy with the performance I am getting out of it. Thanks Bert’s. Hot Rod Hill Climb is just a few days away! I will see some of you up there.

I will post pics as I get them! We are leaving Thursday the 13th in the morning and driving down there. I am excited to be driving my banger there. I will chronicle the journey. Anybody coming through Cheyenne who wants to drive along? There are a couple of guys in town who are planning on driving with us.

  10. Been busy with work and planning for future but here are a couple pics from BVille this year.

Busted a ring in the coupe on first pass, maybe gone a little too far.

Quite the Motley crew, none of this would be possible without them.
    Many Thanks to ALL, John

  12. Following along from 10-UH-C. Hopefully will live to be 110 so I can work on mine.

  13. Check'n in! Turned in some good lap times at Laguna Seca the week before last; putting me in the second row on the Pole (3rd place). Thought I might be able to get by the "Pole Setter" as I had put that particular car "away" at Buttonwillow Raceway last May. However, on the fifth turn of the first lap, the engine began to crackle and occasionally backfire. I was passed by one car immediately; but held off others. Half way through the race, I got myself "sandwiched" between a couple of wandering "Back Markers". Without sufficient power, two more cars got by me. I finished sixth out of 32 finishers (I think forty had started). I and seven others had completed the full ten lap race.

The culprit was a crack in the intake manifold (that I DIDN'T see) that had propagated to the point where number two carburetor and flange were barely hanging on! But we had fun!

    Hard Day ?
Not really, Friday found me in the city (SF) at Greg Martinez shop with him showing me his new tool, a line boring machine, an exceptionally well designed marriage of an old Kwik Way line boring machine with a (?) brand cylinder boring tool mounted horizontally. It is long but it is slick, came with at least 75 lbs. of tooling.

We went thru the shop to select a block, pistons , rods and etc. to duplicate the record engine retired due to deck cracks. Had lunch and found everything we needed so I was able to hang the rods, boy those cur-clips are a bi#ch, cleanup to go to dinner.

Greg dropped me off on the Embarcadero near the ball park had dinner with Pat Coyle Nor-Cal banger hill climber and our Cam Grinder. Walked over to the ball park to catch the Giants over power the Mets, not your average day around here, but beats doing yard work.

Hey folks putting my first Banger together, do the head studs need sealer? Thanks

  16. It depends, I do not use sealer or silicone, I use some anti-seize to prevent damage.
This will depend on the block, chances are if the holes have not been inserted or damaged the well on the bottom of the stud is sealed. If it has been "repaired" it may go into the water jacket, then sealant is necessary.
    YMMV, J

Old Dawg, We saw your car in the pits again, some year we will meet. Thought I heard you slide and get sideways out of one turn. Bob DSCF0519.JPG

  23. Yeah Bob! Sorry I missed you! I believe though that's me to the right of the photo, facing my wife (the tall lady in the turquoise top. I'm wearing a Fedora; and we're talking to Pam Shatraw, formerly with "Victory Lane" magazine and now Marketing Director for the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA). Yes, you DID see me get sideways on Turn TWO (Turn One is a kink just after the track goes past the Start/Finish, under the Overpass). I "over-cooked" it trying to keep momentum due to the loss of torque because of the aforementioned manifold breakage. Note the light gray in the exhaust due to the lean mixture. On the "tear-down" there seems to be no damage. We've already repaired the intake manifold.

Old Dawg, saw a pic of your car in Automobile magazine article about Monterey. I think page 76 if I'm not mistaken.

That girl in the sun glasses is my daughter who treated me to the trip. Same girl in 1982 in my Riley 4Port. Working on my '39 pickup today so the trip was motivational. ;)Bob

  28. I was going to say! I DO remember her. And, you MAY have had a nod from me, as I remember someone (YOU) with her! Dang me! Ain't life funny?

Our youngest daughter (having just moved from Wash. D.C. to Pasadena CA) was with us. She's gotten bitten by the"racing bug"! So "Old Dad" here is going to take her to The Univ. of VARA in February (where I'm a volunteer instructor) to see if she's really serious about it......Just keep "wrench'n", Bob....I think that's what might be keep'n us old guys young!

  29. Here's a video of what Bob and his daughter saw at Monterey, Other than mine, there were three other Ford "Bangers" in the race. There were a number of other old "Bangers" too!

    Enjoy,
