The spare tire was probably there for ballast. The article in the Rodder's Journal of Ohio George's 33 mentions he showed up to one of the big races (probably Detroit), had a spare tire made of concrete. I think the NHRA let him run it for that event, but outlawed it afterwards.

Here's some magazine shots of the "Crazy 8" 33 Willys of Chuck Ivan when it was bracket raced in the 70's by John Hendricks..I recently met John and he clued me in on much of the cars forgotten history. It was pretty successful bracket car!

Interesting combo's here (to me) Ansen sprints, American 200S and a 35/36 nose. Is this your car Willyfaster? I've had several Model 77 Willy's Mostly 35/36. Still have a couple of front end sheetmetal if yo know anybody who needs it.

That blue green 33Willys coupe looks like I guy I met at the NSRA nats in Tulsa I think 76 I was there with my just finished 36 sedan. Something like Ingles, Ingman was his name maybe from Tenn. He had a Vega engine and trans with the Vega rear and front disk brakes. Same BC as the Willys 4 lugs. Really nice car. Man 76 was a long time ago. Robert was his first name, I knew I'd get it. Boy the old brain is working OT Robert Inman was his name.

I love the look of those old "artillery wheels". I'm surprised nobody re-pops copies of them.

Anybody remember what magazine in 60's did build story with cut away drawing of Mike Mitchell's 33 Willys coupe? I was thinking Car Craft or Popular Hot Rodding??

The build story and cut away was Rod & Custom, May of 66. Then the car was featured again in Hot Rod, March of 67, black & white article.

I would guess that this is the same Barnett family that went on to build some killer hemis at their Norcross, GA (and later Atlanta) shop.
