Close ratio 4 speed .... Keep the motor in the power band between shifts. A T5 is pretty wide ratio and 5 th gear will lug it pretty hard. You will probably still have to push it to get it rolling but you guys have that part down by now.

Some random transmission gear info. It’s from the inter web so it must be true.

    Powerglide. 1.76 1st, 1.00 2nd gear
    Th350. 2.52 1st, 1.72 2nd, 1.00 3rd
    Th400. 2.48 1st, 1.48 2nd, 1.00 3rd

Most of the Chevy automatics have a similar drop going into high gear. The th400 has the tightest shift to high.
A short tail shaft TH 400 is the same length as a powerglide, but uses a 32spline yoke instead of the 27 spline of the PG and th350.

I feel as if the overall air density should be taken into consideration . 100 degrees at the Salt the air density is the same as 7000 feet during the day etc. Thats a 20% reduction in everything compared to sea level ?? 6000 rpm now equals 4800 ?? And this even changes during the day. Just a thought ??

  7. Working on the tranny bushing problem, the tailshaft was removed, yoke cleaned up, new bushing installed, and sanded down for enough clearance so fluid can ride between the two ....

Have you heard if there is a minimum speed they have to run to get license and get off short 2 mile rookie course and on to 3 mile competitive course? That would help by giving another mile for acceleration.

Or just get some nitro from Thompson, that take care of that 2 speed transmission problem. :D

Looks like a fair amount of weight on that driveshaft.
You may want to think about a new one when you get home.

  20. We are ready for another attempt tomorrow. Cyl 4 is ok - comp was good, no cyl wall scores as we checked it with a borescope we rented.

Tire size is smaller, we adjusted the throttle, aired up the tires to 75 lbs as Goodyear stopped by today, and the driveshaft/pg tailshaft is all buttoned up.

    Fingers crossed ....

Bonneville or land speed always has a learning curve. Trouble is its a learning curve every year. We choose to do things in building we believe will work and be the best choice. Some times they work, don't, or break in ways we can never anticipate. Not giving up is the key and we are seeing it right before our eyes. It is not Friday yet..go get 'um...guys.

Speaking as a noob here. I hope they can get a couple of strong runs maybe 2-3 runs from now. Keep all the parts on the truck and inch it up as long as everything stays connected. EDIT TO ADD: Parts left on the track surely will not be hepful.

  29. The 640 is prepped and ready for an early morning run tomorrow. It’s suppose to be a little cooler so we changed to a thinner fluid in the air density compensator to reduce the annular drag coefficient on the super wienel drive gear. That outta get ‘er rollin sweet!

We managed to clear out a few grammeters of NaCl in the cross shaft cooling jet for the turbo encabulator as well. The idea to check that came when the guys pitted next to us had to tow back. Seems their jet got plugged, flux pulses reverberated and they blew a johnson rod.
