Ever hear the complaint about too much bright alum and/or other shiney metals on an engine ?
I associate this idea with chev mostly.
But, have seen plenty of ford motors with a ton of ‘bling’ also.

Just got to thinking/wondering if an engine project can have TOO much bling ? What is your opinion on this subject ?
Starting a new project and am unsettled on this subject.

As long as its not gaudy it should be fine. Also, it depends on the surrounding areas (engine bay). 20170818_151252.jpg

Oh, did I say that out loud? In general, I don't care for a lot of chrome, and I like cast aluminum parts to look like cast aluminum. But I guess it depends on the car, era, etc.

I like the sand cast aluminum look.....not the "chromed up" look on an engine!

I don't like shiny things. Simple is nice.

    Minimal chrome
    Easier to keep clean!

But for the guys who have it and keep it up I do like it and can appreciate the effort involved

Shiney chrome doesn't do it for me. I prefer black painted parts or aluminium. Polished alu is OK too.

I use the small chevy model because it's the most hated on..

China stamped chrome valve cover not cool..

Stamped chromed factory Chevrolet script valve covers cool..

  14. If you have the good parts and keep them clean and shiny, it's THE way to go. Think: Dean Lowe, Tony Nancy, John Mazmanian, Tommy Ivo and most of the Top Fuel cars of the mid/late sixties. There isn't very much prettier than a well detailed flathead, Chrysler hemi GMC six or a Kettering Olds engine. Yeah, it's work to keep them up, but it sure is worth it, to some of us. I realize that's not for everyone. It clashes with that rusty, "patina", found at the dump, rat rod look.

  15. I like bling, but I'm too lazy/broke down to deal with keeping it clean...

It can depend a lot on how much you drive the car and where you live. Also how well you can avoid rain.

At about 100% all shiny its as good as needed ! One % more would be over doing it, LOL
Stuff that is shiny, shows repect n love for it,things that are in any form of rot, only shows some one is LAZY to me. I shine as much as I can, every thing I can. Never could aford as much chrome as I'd like,do too running good is #1 anyway !

Chrome works as an accent, as do polished details. Chrome and polish everything and any benefit disappears.
Another realbadthing...shining the hell out of an uninteresting or annoying feature. Look at a bunch of streetrods with their hoods up...in half of them the most conspicuous engine feature is a bunch of heater and AC hoses, up top and blinged to the max with stainless weave, ridiculous out of place aircraft fittings, and always a VERY elaborate and shiny aluminum thing that is just a pass through on the firewall...
If you are looking through a wall of bling over all else, it is hard to even focus on the actual engine.

I have to agree with Sky Six in post 3. As long as it isn't gaudy. I've seen some with so much chrome that you can't pick out the details for the bling. On the other hand I can point one PNW car in particular that has a lot of chrome and aluminum but is so well detailed and you can pick out the details so well that it all looks just right.
I seem to have cornered the market on finned aluminum for 292 Chevy sixes lately and am to the point of worrying that I may have too much finned aluminum.

I like certain things shiny and especially when it is a piece other than the usual that gets your attention . But a 283 detailed painted orange with black air cleaner and super clean hits the spot:)
