Thanx man. There's gotta be a million tricks posted on the H.A.M.B. by now, but that has to be one of the best.

Today I installed my spark plug wires. I’ve always liked the way the wires were loomed in the stock configuration on Y Block engines.

With that in mind a while back I ordered a reproduction loom kit.

It turned out to be a good purchase.

I also didn’t like the wires coming up straight out of the distributor cap so I picked up a set of Taylor 90 degree boots and changed them.

While I was at the wrecking yard last time I came across a newer Chrysler 300 ( Hey this thing has a Hemi )

On top of the engine I noticed a whole bunch of little 4 space ignition wire loom retainers.
I snapped off a half dozen of them

They snap together and are quite nice.

 

Yeah, that’s pretty great.

Damnit.

I did plugs and wires on my '68 Chevy flatbed yesterday. It doesn't look that nice. The Hooker tube headers are going away. Your loom and wire retainer set up is very clean and as usual well thought out.

 

You’ve probably mentioned it but what are you running for air filters?

 

I have a set of these from Vintage Speed.

 

Hey I don’t hate that! Been trying to figure out something for our model a project.

I love a frog mouth scoop but they are basically impossible to get a real filter to work. Some helmet style cleaners look cool but block a lot of air.

Got a link to those? Could be a good option

A rather momentous occasion took place today.
I hung the bed from my engine picker and had my beautiful wife help me position it and lower it carefully into place.

It’s bolted down and I’m now working on installing the fuel tank and the rear section of the fuel lines.

The bed is a big milestone
Everything is looking fantastic!

 

Another little bit of a delay while a few parts go back to the powder coating shop.

I had to slightly change my tank mount and the straps to a better design.

In the meantime I cut some nitrile-cork gaskets for the fuel sending unit and the fuel pickup along with the fuel cap.

 

Boy, does that make some nice gaskets. I see that cutter is pretty expensive. can you show it at work? A video would be excellent.

Sorry guys no video from me on this one.
These Zimmerman gasket cutters are not made anymore, the company is gone out of business.

There are some available through Allstate along with parts while they last.

I used these cutters for years on the job working on industrial sites with the pipefitters.

A while back I found this one NOS and had to buy it.

They’re really nice tools they can also cut other shaped gaskets, not strictly round.

Here’s a video of a similar (larger) gasket cutting tool.
The principal of how they work is the same.

 

It’s a nice little tool, here’s the paperwork that came with it.
I bought it basically new in the box (old)
and never used. I also got a bunch of blades etc.
It only cuts 1/4”- 6” but I know how to make an extension arm to cut whatever size I want.

I envisioned a cutting wheel like a tube cutter. I suppose a guy could fabricate something like this but the details of the manufactured unit would be time consuming.

I'll keep a lookout for a used one.

Ohh
Tail lights mounted

 

Love those tail lights.

 

I got my parts back from the powder coating shop and started getting my gas tank ready to mount.

I had modified the way it was bolted into the bed and changed the strap securing method to the 3” stainless bolts from the top down to secure the tank.

Better than my previous design so with the welding came the need for redoing the powder coating.

The tank is cradled sitting on 1/8” thick rubber secured to the cradle with contact cement and the straps are also lined with 1/8” rubber.

So the tank is completely secured with rubber all around and the cradle is bolted from underneath with 4 — 1/2” bolts.

I just have to install the fuel line and then I can bolt it in place for the final time .

Today involved a rather messy job.
Ever since I bought the new flaming river reversed corvair steering box it was leaking

It leaked in the box when speedway shipped it to me.
It leaked on the chassis during building.
Then it leaked sitting on the shelf.

So I blew it apart and found that it was filled with a red grease that was somehow turning liquid and weeping out the side cover.

So I totally cleaned it out and inspected the seals.
Put it back together with a new gasket on the side cover and filled it up with some 00 grease I picked up at harbor freight last time I was in Texas.

All sealed up perfect

After that I painted it and installed it and the pitman arm and drag link.
