Hot Rods Gifts left for you in the car you purchased ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Al's.C.D.T, Jul 31, 2018.

  1. When I bought my Center Door way back in 1978, at the Columbus Ohio Nationals
The people I bought it from were John and Heidi Pappett from Kitchener Ontario.
For both of us this was a completely new and untried experience.
When I off loaded the car out of the container there was a box inside the car on the back seat and to my surprise and complete delight they had put in a few gifts for me.
There were cowl lights, letter from other Rodders, but the most treasured item I still have which is a drawing of the Center Door carried out by a Dennis Snider.
I still have it to this day, it brings back so many good memories.
Have you guys ever had anything like this.

Hi, I believe jou may have the name spelled incorrectly should be John Pappert. He was quite the car builder and all around good guy in Southern Ontario. I actually also purchased a 1934 Ford one of his old cars. Larry

  5. Larry you are probably correct.
John did build some lovely cars I do believe he built a Ford Model Y which are like a small 34, it was black with flames and I think it won a top award a one of the prestigious shows.
    I'll dig out the pictures.

  6. Yes, John built a Ridler Award winner in the late 70's early 80's. He lived the next block over from my mother-in-law, building in a basement type garage. Dennis Snider was on the executive of the CSRA, dealt with him many times when we were organizing the the Canadian Nationals. Lost John way too early.

  7. Wow
That was it the Ridler Award, I have pictures somewhere, also a nice 32pickup he had.
Is Dennis still around, if so I'd like to thank him for the painting.
Thanks so much for your information.

  8. Alan, the only things I ever found that the previous owner left behind were some petrified french fries between the seats! :D HRP

Only thing left in any of my purchases was a Prince Albert tobacco can. Don't know what ever became of it but I wish I still had it.

Found some Port-O-Walls in the trunk of a 56 Chevrolet 210 Del Ray I bought way back in about 1967. Being 16 years old at the time, they got tossed into the garbage can, along with the "usual stuff" found under the rear seat; some of that "stuff" would have required a CSI Team to properly sort through it. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

  11. John and Heidi were inducted into the Canadian Street Rodding Hall of Fame in 2006, John posthumously. His model Y Ford won the Ridler in 1982 and was the last truly home-built rod to win. That centre door T is a neat car and Dennis’s artwork is a special touch. Thanks for posting.

  12. Back in the early to mid 80's my uncle owned a small used car lot/body shop. He would buy cars from auctions and individuals and drag them to the shop, fix them up and sell them on...my cousin and I job was to de-funk them when he brought them in...
Some of the more interesting things we found were:
    Hand guns
    Cocaine
    Weed
    Assorted "slim Jim's"
A new in the box set if snap on wrenches
    Dentures
    Porn
    And a litter of kittens

Found under the back seat of a 53 Buick was a newspaper from 1953. On the front page was a pic of two gas stations in a price war. 15 and 19 cents per gallon on the signs. There was also a coin purse with a penny, nickle, dime, quarter, half dollar, silver dollar and a five dollar bill... All like new from 1953. The original owner put a time capsule under the seat.

Found a bag of weed under the back seat of an old cop car I bought at auction . Obviously somebody was on their way to jail and managed to stuff it under there while in hand cuffs.

The only "gift" I found when my '36 coupe was delivered was that the seller had put on a crappy set of wheel covers and tried to deny it when I called him on it, cheap bastard.....

When ever I bought a project car, the trunk was the first place I looked. Found stuff there worth more than the car & it kept me busy at swap meets for 30+ years - pretty much a self-supporting hobby until the last few years when my body stopped cooperating.

Question to the tobacconist ...."do you have Prince Albert in a can?"......reply "yes, we do"....."well, let him out!"

a joke from at least as far back as our HAMB friendly cars and quite likely older than that....:D

  21. I bought a government surplus pickup at a auction. It had belonged to the college and the students who where on a work study program used it. The glove box had a good supply of NOS condoms. However there was at least a 100 used condoms behind the seat!

Not really a gift but a nice surprise. When I went to look at a 55 Buick Special the owner told me that it came to him with some nos chrome pieces. I tried not to show how amped up I was when he told me that. I opened the door and here was new old stock front and rear bumpers, tail lights headlight rims and on and on. He said there is more in the trunk, he wasn't kidding. In the trunk was a nos grille, grille bar, emblems and I don't know what else, WOW He said the car came from Arizona (still has Arizona decals in the rear window) in 1978 and sit in a warehouse in Cleveland, Ohio until his son bought it for him as a retirement project. Problem was , he had no interest in cars so he just wanted to get it gone. Needless to say, it came home with me! It took me and my son almost 20 minutes to get it running. I have messed with it a little but it is mostly on the back burner until I get my money pit 65 Gran Sport done.

I know, it didn't happen with out pictures but I lost every thing when my desk top crashed a couple years ago and I am too dumb to get my old pictures back- pissed me off big time:mad::mad::mad:

In the opposite sense. I took all the extra parts and keys to the person that bought my off topic Chevelle. He had to have it right then and there at the swap meet. I followed him to his house to complete the deal so I knew where the car went. The next weekend I went back but he wasn't home at the time so I just opened the car with the extra key and loaded it up along with a note saying here are the extras I told you about. He called me to say thanks for being true to my word.

  25. I know a guy who bought an O/T beater S10 for like $50 and there was more than that in it in change in the ashtray and glove box.

Some 11 years ago a '57 Dodge wagon I got out of a junkyard was full of parts, starters, carbs, some other things, seemed real heavy on the trailer. I cleaned it out and counted up the stuff and figured there was 2300 lbs of parts in it, all the starters and generators are still up in a storage van - like 25 or 30 of them.

Used to travel up and down the west coast buy cars at insurance salvage pools. Found lots of stuff under seats and in glove boxes and locked trunks.

Bought a nearly new Cadillac Eldo, no keys got it to the shop popped the trunk found nearly $500 of new still tagged Nordstroms lingerie. Figured it had been shop lifted. It was my wifes size so I used it as gifts for a few years, made me a hero in her eyes. Never did tell her where it came from.

Bought a beater Chevelle for the sbc no keys. Popped the trunk for a bench top table saw, drill press and a bench grinder. Plus a box with cheapo hand tools.

Last was saved for the best. Bought a 36 Ford street rod T boned. It still ran and drove. Cleaning up the broken glass and found under the front seat a 9mm glock cocked and loaded.

At North Division auto wrecking in Spokane a number of years back, new owners were crushing the old 50's stuff, they flattened a 4 door fast back Chevy, when the hammer came down a bunch of bits of paper money blew out the windows. The roof was so flat no chance of seeing if there was any more still there.

    keep lookin'

  29. I think that paper money car I would have fired up some saws and cut the top back off it.
