I was fortunate enough to meet Billy after a concert. I strategically parked my squarebird out back behind the tour busses and after the concert and post show wound down I got to hang with him a bit and we walked around the car and asked me if the lake pipes were hooked up etc... They were, so I uncapped 'em and showed him what it sounded like! He was kind enough to sign the inside of my Tres Hombres album. Billy was real cool.
I love ZZ's first three albums... they had a groove that was so tight, and in my opinion, some of the best music from '1970-1975. Frank Beard and Dusty Hill don't get the credit they deserve... Frank is just awesome. I hope both of them are doing well and they can continue to rock, or just sit back and relax after their 50th anniversary tour coming up.

Looks like Frank is having a sammich. Billy OTOH, is holding what would become one of the most iconic Les Pauls in R&R history, the one & only Pearly Gates!

Living here in Austin I've got to meet him and hear him play several times. He was influenced by Jimi much more than you think.

    Just read this article:

Cool interview, but it doesn't change anything. Jimmie's style is about as far away from Hendrix as it's possible to get. Nothing wrong with either one, they're just different, that's all. He says in that interview, he doesn't like the term "purist", I can appreciate that. He's just trying to play what's in his head. And Jimmie's style is pretty unique. But he's much closer to Jimmy Reed (and Eddie Talyor) than Jimi Hendrix; and trust me, that is a huge compliment.

  9. DJ DMD recorded "25 Lighters" in Billy's studio in Houston. Billy really dug the song and wanted ZZ to do a cover for years as a homage to Fat Pat and the Houston ghetto rappers, but struggled on how to do it. Fourteen years later, inspired by DJ Screw's ‘chopped and screwed' technique for deconstructing hip-hop, he worked out how to adapt 25 Lighters by combining hip hop with the string plucking blues style of another famous black Texan musician, Lightening Hopkins.

  10. I'm glad Rev Billy figured it out, even if that doesn't make much sense to me

Here's some pics I shot of that car a couple weeks ago at Jimmy Shine's open house.

They came a long way from "Burger Man"... At least Cadzilla made an appearance!

  16. Ha ha, theres a lot of "cheeze" in that Burger Man vid! Billy has a hot set up on the guitar in that though, love that sustain. Hes so humble in the BB King video. I have seen another when he sets in with Les Paul, and Les doesn't even know who he is. But Billy doesn't care, he loves and respects these guys so much and so honored to be in their presence. He also knows he wouldn't be where hes at if it wasn't for them. There's not too many like him around these days.

    That is really awesome.

  18. Hmmm, is it possible some H.A.M.B. members starred in a ZZ Top video? This is a quite a different sound for the guys.

That's from the Deguello album, a great record, one of their best. It also has She Loves My Automobile, another great car song.

I read that the engine sound on the Deguello album , is from a slant 6 Mopar owned by Rev Billy. Love that album!
