Ever see a kid with a mean look on his/her face? Or a piranha that is hungry? Or a girl that just got disappointed in not getting a pony for her birthday? Well, Buick cars and wagons have always had the “toothy” looking grilles to accentuate what is coming at you in the rear view mirror.

Ever since my dad bought his black 4 door, 1949 Buick, those teeth will always remind me of the carefree days in our first real house, growing up. We knew it was my dad driving up the street just by identifying that massive “toothy” grille.

The Buick Company continued to build the “toothy” grille until 1955. But, regardless, all of those “toothy” grilles are symbols of people showing displeasure with something…big teeth and all. Or at least, visiting your local dentist for a root canal…eeeeww…

In the early Buicks, the toothy grille gives the cars the “attitude and looks” that makes then stand out anywhere. A couple of Saturday car events ago, a big black convertible was headed our way. It looked like a black Cadillac convertible from a distance, as there is one rolling around Southern, So Cal. But, this one was moving fast with the top down and it was definitely a “toothy,” black Buick. Open air, low cruising style, sunny So Cal, what is not to like? (too fast on the drive by for a photo.)

“If 1949 was the year that put Buick at the forefront of elegant, modern, postwar design, then 1950 has to be the year that should have seen–if anything–mild facelifts that only improved the new look from Flint. This, in fact, happened to some degree, as is often the case when a complete redesign is a few years into the future. But of all the mechanical advancements and visual updates that appeared, it was the new face of Buick that stole the headlines. Upon introduction, the graceful waterfall grille had morphed into the bucktooth Buick overnight.

In previous incarnations, the vertical grille bars–significantly slimmer, mind–were positioned behind the upper grille bar, or mustache, and the bumper. For 1950, the grille bars, nine individual pieces, began at the upper grille bar in traditional fashion, and then were extended over and around the bumper. No longer just a static design element, the vertical bars inadvertently (perhaps?) doubled as bumper guards, which were mounted via bolts through the bumper and the bumper support bar.

On paper, the combination bumper-grille was full of positives: The Buick front office claimed that, in the event of a collision or minor impact, damaged bars could be replaced individually–rather than the whole unit of previous years–thus reducing repair costs.”

A 32 Ford is a icon in the hot rod world. From beater 32s to full fendered models to open roadsters, a hot rod, pure bred as it has become to be known. Growing up in the early hot rod building days, we always noticed that the prices of any old 32s were much higher than the Model A roadsters, etc.

So, the hobby moves on with the exclusive 1932 club roadsters, while others started to like other models of the early Fords. At one of the displays in the Price Transfer Automobilia Museum Collection, there were rows of hot rods in all level of builds. This 32 roadster had the completed show quality look, in contrast to its neighbor, a stock bodied early hot rod Phaeton. This Price Transfer collection of cars shows the quality of cars still in existence, here, as well as elsewhere in all of the USA, collections, small and large.

The Price Transfer Collection as vast and historic as it shows. It is only open to private charity functions and special events throughout the year. As the TV ad mentions: “CHECK YOUR LOCAL LISTINGS…”

The 32 grille shell look was a very popular addition for other year/model roadsters, coupes and sedans. Sometimes it is hard to designate which is which. What year is this roadster model?
