More questions! Black Falcon above has straight axle, and rear tires poking past bodywork; yet same rule list shows:

"All parts of the tire tread and wheel must be inside of stock body or fender line.
Fender splash pans must be retained...
Full size stock radiator required for type of body used.
Must be stock production type rear end. Ratchet type (limited slip) or locked rear ends accepted. Quick-change rear ends not permitted.
Full street equipment required including fan, generator, lights and stock water pump.
Must retain complete stock front suspension system as produced by the manufacturer on the assembly line for the body used."

  2. I think you might find that some of these cars ran at unsanctioned tracks, where they went by their own track rules.
Note, C/MP, F-1 (formula 1, multiple carbs) is kind of a cross-breeding of NHRA and AHRA cars.

Don't know the year that NHRA changed engine rules for Modified Production, but I ran against Lee Shepard in D/MP in his Chevy powered Maverick at Indy in 1973 or 1974 (old age memory lol).

Some interesting hood scoops and ram air ducting on a few of those cars posted. I remember seeing a "MOPAR" in a car magazine, that was a Modified Production Class car, and it had Chevrolet power under the hood (???).

Charlie I looked up the NHRA 1972 (same for 73) rules which states as following for MP-" Must be standard American automobile production model with stock production heads. Year, make and model optional. Two 4-barrel or three 2 barrel carburetors maximum.Fuel injection prohibited. One engine only. Any modifications may be made to engine and/or components, including clutch and flywheel..."

The statement on engine make optional would allow Reher and Morrison to run the Chevy in Shepard's Maverick. I remember that there were three of us left for D/MP class. Doug Thompson in a Maverick powered by a 302 (I believe) Cleveland Maverick, Shepard in the Chevy powered Maverick and myself in the Corvette. Thompson won the coin flip and I got to run Lee Shepard in the Chevy powered Maverick (lucky me lol).

  7. Not that it matters much but when RMS won the Winters in '74, they were in F or G /Gas. I always assumed it because the car was a crossbreed. Rule must have changed around that time then.

Mark, when they won the Winters in 1974 were they running the Corvette? I know they were running the Maverick in early 1970's.

Actually that would be Norman Day Speed Shop (later just Norm Day) out of central Indiana. Norm (much) later ran the Ivo four motor dragster in its station wagon guise.

Is it a restoration of original or a tribute build? In any case it looks great.

  20. I don't know, but you couldn't have a fiberglas tilt front end and no bumper in M/P.
We're still in the M/P thread, right? Wait. I'll go up and look...
    Yes we are.
