H.A.M.B.er's I ran across this 1949 Canadian Ford Meteor for sale. The seller says he thought it was originally built in Tennessee as that is how the car is still titled. It is a 49 Club Coupe (businessmans aka no back seat) that has been nosed and decked, with Pontiac trim on the sides. Frenched license plate and Flathead powered with a three speed overdrive. I am looking for any information folks might have on this car. Who built it when and where in Canada did it come from. Here are some pictures to help. As always I thank you all for the assistance you provide. MrPhat40
Having a Tennessee title only means that in it's history someone in Tennessee owned it and registered it there. There are a lot of Canadian Fords and yours looks nice.
I really like it. I've had a '51 club coupe for over thirty years and have kept it stock looking because I couldn't find anything modified that I thought looked better. This one may change my mind. The Merc grille, the side trim, and the skirts just plain work!
If that were two-tone, it would resemble the shoebox that James Dean collided with in Cholame... that Pontiac trim was distinctive. Looks great...
RBAntque I think your car is the same one I am looking at. Please let me know about it PM me if you would feel more comfortable discussing Really appreciate it MrPhat40 Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Yep, same car! Look at the accessory guards under the door handles. (They are one thing I wouldn't duplicate.)
As to where it was built do you mean originally or the modifications. One would think it was originally built in Oakville Ont. but Ford of Canada did have other assembly plants, Burnaby BC and Regina Sask. come to mind. Meteors are an interesting car, th ewhole concept of it. Have a '56 Meteor Rideau Victoria which I should get started on...
Fortunateson I was hoping to find out who made have done the modifications. The when and what they started out. S you can see lots of trim wholes were filled and some frenched body work. Thank for any info or thoughts. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Not a Ford Meteor. It is a Meteor which was a stand alone brand that was sold by the Mercury Lincoln dealers in Canada. Just a bit of Canadian trivia. Nice car. I have a 51 Meteor Club Coupe.
I want to educate people here that the Meteor in question has its factory grille in it. Meteor cars like this one had a mercury grille in them from the factory. I don't know if it was a direct bolt in from mercury or if it was slightly different and made specifically for meteor.
I was using the term "Mercury grille" in a generic way. People in northern Minnesota know these things.
Meteor hoods have a slightly different curve where it fits above the grille. That hood will not work on a Ford. I have two '51 Meteor grilles hanging around.
Could be a Meteor, could be a Ford that someone put a Meteor grille into. In the fifties you could order Meteor parts in the US through your local Mercury dealer. A look at the ID plate on the firewall would tell the tale. Meteor was a low priced Mercury sold by Mercury dealers in Canada. It wasn't built in Oakville, the Oakville plant didn't open until 1953. I know, my dad helped build it. I still have a piece of rebar that the blacksmith forged into a prybar for him. Before then the Fords came from Walkerville near Windsor Ontario.
The VIN should tell you where and when it was made http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_serialno_49-59VINdecode.htm
Note the curve on the front of the hood. Ford is straight across. So it's not likely someone added that grill.
Had a strong running 51 CM Mercury motor , Dual exhaust and electric fuel pump as I recall. Purchased from Goldenrod Garage Freeport Maine. Call Neil Martin the owner . I bet he could give you more history on the car. I traded it in for the 50 Mercury in my avatar.
