So last Saturday I’m sitting on the couch late at night browsing the classifieds as we always do and there it was, a super clean, rust free ’34 5-window coupe on Craigslist. First thought was it’s gotta be sold already, there's no way it lasted the 4 days the ads been up. Sunday morning I called JP up in Placerville to find although his phone had been ringing off the hook, the coupe was still available. Monday morning at 2am my dad and I left Southern California headed 500 miles north to Placerville. Arriving at JP’s place was like stepping into hotrodder folklore. His barn and surrounding property were covered in all things cool from the dozens of frames and projects strewn around the property to the barn of probably 50 or so incredible projects in all states, hundreds of porcelain signs and memorabilia, his little ’34 Ford Trog racer and a ’40 Ford said to have been owned by Edsel Ford… (minor detail).

Within 30 seconds of seeing the coupe I knew the deal was done and my dad and I spent the next two hours or so talking with JP, hearing his amazing stories of his collection of over 200 cars, dozens of businesses & properties and stories about life in general. JP was definitely a one of a kind character and certainly a new friend. My dad and I loaded up the ’34 and made the 10 hour trek home. JP called me yesterday morning to make sure my dad and I made it home safely and let me know he’s already making phone calls to help track down some parts for my new project.

The ’34 Ford 5-Window Coupe has always been the ultimate of the ultimate for me but always seemed like the way off, one day project. So excited to own this car and can’t wait to start chipping away on my dream car.

Well that's exciting. You never know what you'll find when you show up to answer an ad!
Does it have an engine/trans. What do you have planned?

It has a 350/350 with a 60's Corvette IRS. Don't really have much of a plan as of yet but know it won't keep that motor and drivetrain. Would love to put an early Caddy 331 and a 4 speed in it but we'll see...

This is smaller than a station wagon. Weren't you upsizing for family reasons? Did you have to trade a kid for the 34?

JP seems to have his hands in a whole bunch of stuff but sounds like contruction in the Bay Area is the big one... He doesn't have any kids so I'm trying to see if he'll adopt me. :)

P.S. Make sure you move that rear axle back slightly to centre the wheels in the fender. Is that a 32 cabriolet on the hoist as well? I'm in awe with his collection of automobilia and cars.

I hear ya... The goofy Vette IRS is kicking the rear tire forward. That is indeed a '32 Cabriolet. Neat stuff for sure!

So I got a chance to play with the new ‘34 coupe a bit on Saturday. I robbed the wheels and tires from my sedan and did a little “floor jack” mockup just for fun. Not sure if this cars gonna keep the fenders or not in the long run but man I like this look!
