It seems that you want to use one of the engines you already have.Makes sense to me. If both engines are in equally good condition I would use the 327 .If not I would use whichever one is fresher.Keep in mind that untold numbers of 4000 pound plus Impala station wagons were equipped with 283s.

I had a 64 Biscayne wagon with a 235\powerglide-THAT was a DOG.We put a 283 3 speed in it and it lost a lot of its canine personality.Anyway it seemed so to me.

  8. If you want nice cheap Chevy power I really like the 307 with 305 HO heads and a nice cam. Extremely hard to beat the $:HP ratio on that one.
Small bore has small flame front so 10:x compression on premium pump gas is no problem and it puts 300 plus HP to the crank. They are cheap to feed and run damn good.

If you can't decide on a 327 or 283 then the 307 is a mix of both.

Plus you can make the 307 look like a 350 a lot easier than visa versa!

    283 with a TH200R4 behind it.

  11. The 327 truck engines used a forged dish piston. one of those with a set of 602 casting 305 heads would be great with todays crappy fuel. electronic HEI would be a help also. Thicker head gaskets will lower compression ratio also. polishing combustion chambers will also increase CC's and remove potential hot spots . The 307 is also a good pulling engine. I installed a 307 with polished and port matched 305 heads in my 57 dump truck. better pulling than the 261 six. and it uses less gas to boot.

  12. Thick head gaskets will reduce compression, but doing that causes more problems - that's not their intended use and a bad out come should be expected from that.

The early 327/283 motors had provision at the rear of the block for a PCV system and if you have a filler/breather tube on the intake you can use any valve covers without breathers. And it will look "vintage". I run one of each in a couple of my cars, both on pump gas, no issues. But I am very easy on the throttle on both cars. The 327 has a PCV that connects at the rear of the carb. My 283 has one that connects to the filler/breather tube. You can also use the Corvette finned valve covers without breathers on these as some like to do. But I don't think you can with the 350. Could be wrong of course. DSC08019.JPG

Either one will run fine. Hardened seats are not a necessity. A good trans is important . A th 350, or a 700r4, with the 283. There is no replacement for displacement, so i would recomend the 327. I have 2 and run 87 octane in both. 350s are nice, but why anyone would sell one, and buy a 350, and dress it up to look like a 327 is beyond me. .

I can't see putting a Chevy engine in Olds. Remember when in the 70s or i0s GM had to give people who bought Old with Chev engines a 200 rebate. A 350R would do everything you want and be a real Olds engine in it.

  19. I don't know why,,, for me a Pontiac has to have a Pontiac engine.
We stuffed a Chevy into a 70 FB and it made me a little sad.
Fords need Chevy engines (any GM really)
Hemi can go in anything you want to fit it into. Free pass there
Trucks with Buick Olds, pontiac or caddy and hemis are really cool.
Then there's any amd everything else, it doesn't matter much to me, decision driven by price and availability or originality goals.

If it were mine ( which it is not)
    My two choices would be...,,
    303 Rocket or....
    394 J2 with a 4 speed Hydro

If you ever find you don't want the 283 collecting dust , well ? My dad had a 65 Olds 330 and 4 speed back in the 70s. Bought it from a friend of his because his wife would keep burning the clutch up and after the fourth clutch said that was enough.

Whichever one has the best ring seal and least rattly valve guides. If theyre both worn out theyll probably perform about the same - drive down the road just fine.

They're both SBCs, either one will be fine with or without "tire smoke" so the choice is yours. I'd expect a 350 to get better mileage for all the right technical reasons, the easiest to verbalize (thanks 31 Vic) is the extra TQ at cruise RPM levels. Share what you do though. I'd hate to think this was all for naught...

    Hey K,
Back in the late 50s early 60s, Gene Adams had a 49 Olds Fastback with an Olds motor that killed everyone in the Gas Coupe/Sedan Class. It looked like a car we could all drive on the street for cruising and fun. But, I know you have a 283/327 choice.

So, also during that same time period, Bones Balogh had a 49 Chevy Fastback that had a 283 in it, but it also ended up having a 671 added to the mix.

We had a 283 with 6 Strombergs on top in our street legal Willys coupe and it ran great for a small block. Then later, we had a 327 in a 40 Ford Sedan Delivery that ran like a top, with little to do except for gas and normal maintenance for daily driving. For normal street driving, daily driver, I would go with the 283, if you have access to parts. It is part of hot rod history and small enough to fit anywhere. The 327 was ok for us, though.

Your car is a classic and either motor will be fine for daily driving. If we had another hot rod, it would have a 283 in it, just for simplicity and original style.

    327. We put the 300 hp cam in a 58.jpg 58 impala with turbo 350 and 3:336 gears. It gets it on! it hauls that big ass car around. the only thing I might have considered doing different is and od trans.

  30. I have some 283 valve covers..Canadian that say Pontiac, so for fun a 1949 Oldsmobile with a 327 and Pontiac valve covers.
When it comes to the 303 I have had a couple, they look great but are a bit lacking.
The 394, I had one in my starfire convertible too much compression and slim jim trans have a few flaws that are huge money to fix. Cracked drive plates.
I am going to run the 327 and hope for the best. And in the meantime build a olds 350, as my trans will take all GM bolt patterns. Thanks for all the input
