So, this happened. Evidently, it's a good idea to:
    A. Use a lead mallet rather than a rubber mallet to tighten knock-offs, and...
    B. Retighten knock-offs after the first 100 miles, and periodically thereafter, and...
    C. Shorts and sandals makes one look goofy putting a wheel back on your car by the side of the road with a borrowed jack, and finally...
    D. Carry a jack and a the aforementioned lead BFH in your trunk.

Happened to me and some how I forgot to tighten 5 lug nuts,I hope the scraped paint of the drum is the only damage.

My wife looked at me in horror and said, "What was that?", just as the wheel passed us and rolled off into the distance. It was sorta funny at the time, but I did wish, at that moment, that I had a jack and hammer in the trunk. Never leave home without them. :p

Yes, per the markings on the hubs and the knock off's. RH on the left side, LH on the right side. That seems backwards to me, from the perspective of having snapped a couple lug bolts on early MOPAR cars...

We've all made boneheaded mistakes, I've done that too, but have had a wheel come off. Only make that distinctive clunking noise...

When I worked at a restoration shop, we used a lead block and a rubber mallet. That way it still got tight, but you didn't wreck the paint if the mallet touched the car.

As they say. Any landing is a good one. The alternative sucks.
Glad you guys are all right.

Lug nuts are best! Properly torqued; of course!

  16. Having been in that situation I can sympathize.

My dad sent me to a local tire shop to get 4 recap's for mom's
'62 Ford, this was the 3rd or 4th time driving without a older person with me, I arrived just as they were opening on Saturday morning, the tires were replaced in record time and was on my way home.

I couldn't have driven more than a mile when the car suddenly drops & pulled hard to the left as I was rounding a curve, fortunately the speed limit was 35 MPH when I lost the left front wheel, lodging it in the fenderwell when the one on only nit snapped the stud.

I didn't have a clue as to what happen and all I could do was walk back to the shop and tell them the tire came of and call my dad using their phone.

They sent a wrecker to pick up the car and realized they had over looked 4 lug nuts, they told my dad there was no excuse for what had happened and paid for the minor damage done. HRP

At least you didn't tear up a fender.
Probably could have gone a lot worse than it did.

It has lug nuts, they hold the knock off hubs on. ;-)

Precisely why fenders don't belong on a hot rod. When parts, IMPORTANT parts, fall off, they don't wreck anything.

I'd like to know where that bloody angel was when I didn't tighten the knock-off properly! They always show up after the fact. :p

Much like why all those parachutist that suddenly shoot upward in all those WWII movie's. o_O But there is an explanation to all this madness.
