Rear tires held weight for the first time. Hopefully I can get the front done Monday or Tuesday night since I'm gonna be in Amarillo for the drags this weekend. after stepping back last night and looking at it, I got excited all over again. I forgot to take some pictures of it, but I'll have my dad send me some so I can post them!

One of the very first drag cars to really impress me, was a 62-64 Chevy II, 2 door sedan, with a 427 and TH-400, running brackets, at what was still then called, Seattle International Raceways. Plain Jane, little Chevy II, with stock style steel wheels (including the 4 bolt front hubs/brakes), hitting the ten second mark; this was in about mid 1969, and I was still a highly impressionable 18 year old kid. It was even the stock, light blue that a lot of them were. If I could only go back to that time.............................................................I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

 

Thanks for sharing! I am really leaning towards painting this the stock light blue. I love that color!

I went ahead and ditched the small bearing rear end. I picked up a big bearing rear the other day and tore it apart. I’m going to narrow the housing to 50”. Grandpa surprised me with a new spool and he’s giving me his old 4.88 gear set up!

Do you ever think, what was I trying to do when I did that? So tonight I hit the reset button and welded the ends of the crossmember back on, and then cut them back off a lot better. It now is a snug fit down into the frame rails, and I have the hang over on top of the frame rails. I plan is to heat them up and bend them over the frame rail and then weld it in

I got my steering box mounted, had some steering linkage that will work for temporary steering, and I extended my steering shaft 10” which put the steering wheel about 5” further back than stock. I got the crossmember tacked in too. It’s a pretty cool feeling to turn the wheels with the steering wheel for the first time!

Is sleeving the bolt holes through the frame for the steering box a common thing to do, or is it not necessary?

It is necessary, unless you make a bracket. You can't just drill a hole through both sides of a frame tube, and stick a bolt through it, and expect it to hold a steering box in place. The tube will crush, you won't be able to fully torque the bolts.
