I think that it was Lemay that started the Auto Hobby Shops on military bases, where you had a multi space garage with all types of loaner tools that you could use at a small cost of .25 cents per hour, work on your car. Some of these Auto Hobby Shops would put George Barris's shop to shame.

 

Went to my first Portland Roadster Show at the coliseum in 1969, I was 15 and felt like a kid in a candy store, a very big candy store.
Went there to see ZZ top in the early 80's, dig them guys but my ears are still ringing.

 

I knew Curt Lemay was tough...But to form the SAC using only a Corvette????

KOMA was located in the OKC suburb of Moore. As a teenager in bumfuck So. Dak. in the 60s that was the go-to station for rock and roll/ top 40 music. Heard my first Beatles/Rolling stones/ Beach boys etc.etc. on KOMA.

I remember listening to KOMA as a kid. Late summer nights sleeping out in the back yard and scrolling through the dial on a small portable AM Radio......

 

Is 444 his cell number??? The air compressor hook up is interesting.

 

I used to do the same here in Motown with CKLW am800.... Those were some great times.....

 

As a kid in Vernon, BC, I used to listen to KOBY in San Francisco, KFBK in Sacremento, and a station in Omaha. I particularly remember KOBY, because of the fantastic rock and roll, and because a frequent advertiser was Hamms Beer.
I went SFO many times, but always forgot to try the beer.

Ah CKLW. there is a great documentary on this great radio station called the rise and fall of the big 8. It is a story of one of the biggest radio stations ever and how it shaped the music industry as told by many famous music artists that owe their success to being played on this station. there is also a lot of historic footage as well.
