59-64 Chevrolet HOUSING, the third member will fit 55-64 full sized Chevrolet passenger cars, 56-62 Corvettes, and 62-63 Nova/Chevy II. Not a "P" case third member, meaning not a Positraction unless someone modified the case to fit one, and that's doubtful. I'm leaning towards 62-64 due to the finned drums. No idea what the "smaller" rear end is. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

it looks sort of like a 59-64 chevy rear, but not quite...

    not sure what it is.

Well, the truth is that "IF" you could ever be so lucky, someone local might need one if theirs is totally ruined...then..YES, they would be worth something...but, that never seems to work out for most of us.

  12. for kicks you could list it over on the 348-409 site. Might be someone looking for a resto part(s)
If you are not a member I can post it for you with some additional info

While those rears are not really strong, they are kind of a traditional rear. It would work in a low budget low power car. I would give it to somebody building such a project

I agree with Squirrel it looks like a 58-64 Chevy BUT those drums look Old/Pont. check the bolt circle if 5" then Olds/Pont. secondly 57/58 Olds/Pont had leaf springs not coil like that one. You have to do more research (homework). Those upper mounting arm is not Pontiac, they had a double mount from the center area of the rear. My guess is a 58ish to 64ish Buick.

Wouldn't a Buick of this vintage still be torque tube drive?

Farmalldan I did not know that, when did they switch? I seem to recall
(maybe) 62 buick full size being open but not interchangeable with the Olds/Pont. stuff.

it looks a lot like a chevy, but several things are different...the drum is too big, the center section has too many ribs, wrong shock mounts, the upper control arm does not look right, etc.

It'll be fun to figure it out...

I already told you what it is, and it's not what some others have guessed. The third member is a $25.00 to $150.00 part, all day, anywhere in the country, depending on the ratio, as long as it is't all rusted up inside. Everything else is too rusted up to be worth anything, other than scrap. The third member could be anything from a 3.08 to 3.36 to 3.55 to 3.70 to 4.11, being an open carrier. Hunt the numbers down on the housing and third member. Looking at the complete rear end from the YOKE end, facing you as it would be in the car, there should be some embossed numbers (like from a punch) to your left on the axle housing, about 1/3 the way from the third member. The third member itself should have a raised part number and casting date, and an embossed number on a small pad to your right on the third member. The little "sundial" looking thing is the month the third member was cast. It's got a 4-3/4" axle stud pattern. Was't in a performance car, like a 409 car, or 327 4 speed car, because it only has a single upper trailing arm. I think it only looks "big", because of the little rear end it's alongside. Got a shot of where the locator bar attaches? I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

    it's not a chevy rear. It's a Buick rear.

    look again, carefully, Butch.

The tape measure looks like it has 5 on 5 bolt pattern to me.

  26. 9 3/8" buick. Strong rears, but ZERO aftermarket support.

  27. If it is a '55-'64 Chevy it would be the right width for my sedan delivery project with a 283. I'm fairly local and might be interested. If it's a Buick, well it depends on width, ratio, condition, bolt pattern, etc.
