Yes I do. If you read the last few pages I discussed my plan already. Should know within a week if it'll work. If not, then electric:-(

I cut hardboard to the required size and cut the leather to the same size. The leather is so old I couldn't fold it around the hardboard so I used black plastic "C" profile which if heated will bend around corners. 20180508_093259.jpg 20180508_100015.jpg 20180508_100554.jpg

Then using tank tape on the back I secured the plastic trims in place. 20180508_100559.jpg

Fitted to the car. It's not perfect and parts of the leather are already worn through but it's a Deusenberg J part in my Jalopy so I'm really happy it worked at all. 20180508_134627.jpg 20180508_134636.jpg 20180508_134642.jpg 20180508_134655.jpg

Two of the rear lug nut studs wouldn't hold the torque and on the other side the hub went in too far, causing the drum to rub on the backing plate, so both hubs had to come off again.
This would be really difficult without my original hub puller.
So I replaced the two defective studs and installed a shim on the other side which did the trick. No rubbing anymore. 20180510_110049.jpg 20180510_110057.jpg

Finally for today I made up a front license plate holder out of an old 1946 front splash pan. 20180510_133716.jpg

Btw. Those fugly headlights are temporary until I've finished making a pair of E&J reproduction lights.

Here's the prototype headlight ring I had made locally. They're working on the shells right now.

One Snazzy Jalopy Comin Up...;)...Edward I am a little shocked at the plate bracket...its wider than the rad...that plate will be an air brake...just kidding.

It must be kind of a strange feeling to be retracing a past design such as the lights and for that matter the car itself.

This truly is a timewarp of sorts and really looking fantastic.

I was over thinking the fan problem. So tried a new approach. I made up an adapter for a Model-T fan out of a section of 1934 torque tube and welded it to the water pump pulley. The pulley is cast but I think I got it welded safely.

After that I figured I could try and start the car so I filled the cooling system with water. Unfortunately my cooling system turned out to have more holes in it than Bonnie and Clyde' s '34 Ford.

My beautiful radiator has holes in it too. So tomorrow it's being collected by my radiator repairer.

My water pump adapter is leaking a bit so I'll have to weld that a bit more. And the block outlet was pissin' water out so I'll have to address that too.

    Real bummer! 20180515_141007.jpg 20180515_141002.jpg

Just read all 10 pages of this thread. To say "awesome job" seems like such an understatement, but, well... awesome job!

I wish I could stop but I've got to get it finished in time for Pendine and time is running out. Money too!

  16. Yeah, but that’s what makes this build so inspirational- that you don’t settle, until it just right!

Here's a beginner's question for you guys with 4 banger experience. Should I place the thermostat in the head before the pump, between the pump and the header tank or on the block outlet?

  18. What thermostat?...
If adding one, I don't think it makes that much difference, but if possible I would place it as close to the head as possible.

You reckon I don't need one in a Model A engine?

Today was the big day. I runs! After a few teething problems.
The fuel pump pictured below worked but didn't pump so I rebuilt it by combining parts from two pumps. Does anyone know where I can get rebuild kits for these pumps with modern ethanol proof gaskets?
Also the GM alternator was toast and shorted out.
Anyway it ran nicely without the alternator and without the radiator. Couldn't run it long obviously.
So - located another alternator and replaced the toasted wire. Fitted a choke rod and now just waiting on the radiator to come back.
Front shocks are on the way, so fingers crossed should be able to finish it in a week.

  24. Looking great! I just had an old SW pump rebuilt by Charlie Schwenlan in NY (CharlieNY on the Fordbarn.) He may be able to tell you where to get the diaphragm material. I can give you his phone number if you'd like?

It's not just the diaphragm. There are gaskets in there and a rubber bellows. There must be a rebuild kit available as these are common pumps I believe.

Well. The story goes that the man who built this jalopy in the 30s kept it. By the early 50s he started to get some fender citations so he decided to fit fenders.
He found an old pair of skis he hadn't used since the 30s.
The rear fender brackets were attached to the rear axle. They're fabricated out of a pair of 1932 Duesenberg J Con rods triangulated to the original shock studs using a pair of cut off 1932 rear wishbones welded to a pair of cut down 1932 shock dog bones.
The front mounts are fabricated out of s pair of F1 front shock mounts welded to cut down 1946 front stabilizer bar.

Not finished yet but getting there.

  28. You sir are a man with amazing talent!

When I first saw what you were trying to do with a late model I thought you had lost your mind but you have proven me wrong and have really shown true craftsmanship throughout the entire build.

If we still had the rating system you would get 5 stars from me. HRP

Thanks HRP. I really appreciate that. But I think you were right in the first place. I really did go crazy.

  30. My point was that Charlie might know where to get parts? But never mind?
