Hey everyone, I remember back in the day some guys with 57 Chevy's would remove the hood spears and would fab/mold in from the spear opening radius and extend it a few inches. Sorry if I'm not explaining it correctly. I don't have any pictures although I did a search here. Anyway just wondering if anyone has some pictures or can show how It's done. I always thought It looked good especially with a Buick grill. Thanks

I expect you make a piece of metal the shape it needs to be, and weld it on.

I did mine using a 180 deg. U bend of the diameter closest to the hood spear, a tad smaller gives you room to open it up at the hood line. I should say you have to cut it open and massage it till it looks the way you want it. Then weld and bondo.

  5. There was a magazine article years back showing Bill Hines filling and extending the holes. If I remember correctly he used 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" exhaust tubing....and lead....

I was quite smitten with these the first time I saw one done.
Not positive but didn't Project X have this mod. done in one of its early iterations.

Yes, I first seen it on a few 57's that came to the garage I hung out in. That was 62/63. I liked it until about 8 years ago when one of those guys that had it back when told me about another hood treatment that I'm going for.

Fabbed in the '60's out of exhaust tubing. Seen a lot of "ugly" attempts" over the years. Reminiscent of a '57 Chevy Truck hood..........................

I like the spears.... that’s kinda what makes a ‘57 Chevy a ‘57 Chevy. If I was going to modify the hood Spears, it would be to replace them with dual 30 calibers. Bones

Looks like ones on the ‘57 Chevy truck hood for sure. See center piece in pic. IMG_3139.JPG

I swapped the Spears side to side, had to whittle them a bit. Now they are canted a little. Been done for 10years, not one person has noticed 20160612_175620.jpg

Saw a really nice, black 57 years ago with a 57 Buick grille. He had tunneled the hood peaks and placed (working) turn signal lenses in them. I asked what they were from? Answer; 57 Buick.

Alice Cooper beat you to the idea with his 57 (pictured with customizer Eddie Paul).

Pete Millar did the machine gun thing in Drag Cartoons or an Arin Cee episode 50 + years ago.
One of the little mags did the scoop shaving with '39 Chev taillight buckets when they were still available new.

  18. You can do away with the spears completely by bolting on a 57 Canadian Pontiac hood...........it's flat and is a true bolt on............

I guess the idea to remove and smooth may have originated by seeing this standard feature in the truck hood... @57tailgater were you sectioning a hood or making it easier to store...?

  20. The spears were the first thing to go when I did a mild dechroming on my 57 Sports Sedan.
