Boy, that sprint car race grandstand is sure OSHA worthy.

 

Man back in the good old days of the early 60's we would all get in the family car and go for a Sunday drive and could actually drive around on Westover and see the planes but not too close to the flight line. Even got to see the then pretty new B-52's and man when they took off they left trails of black smoke from the engines.

When this series of photos were taken I believe they pitted on both sides of the track, there were no grandstands to speak of yet and what is now the spectator side is a lot flatter. In other photos from the Life series you can see a bit of the rolling landscape you're talking about. Cool story about Garlits, pretty sure his daughter wasn't the only one conceived under that tree over the years LOL. A lot of drag racing history was made at the "Sandbox" over the decades.

 

I am not going to say it but you know what I am thinkin!!
