350 chevy firing order

Hi to all my name is Hessler, first I wanted to introduce myself and thank everyone for all the great support, inspiration, knowledge and I could go on, but I recently bought the car of my dreams, a 1937 ford slantback, but like any rod its got issues and Im trying to iron them out, one is the timing, when I first got the car I noticed the timing was bad and I figured easy fix, well yesterday I tried fixing it but soon realized that no change would fix the timing issue, then I got to think ok... what else could be wrong, I thought one cable must be on the wrong spot, then to my surprise I saw something I have not seen before, my firing order is this 1-2-4-6-8-7-5-3 clockwise and I was like what!!! Scratching my head, I had never seen this on a chevy engine, I know the engine has minor work, maybe a cam, the previous owner did not know much about the engine.

Any thoughts? The car runs, starts, but sometimes the engine will not shut off immediately.

Have you looked up the correct firing order? Initial timing a 8 BTC for a start.

 

Those are all odd #s followed by all even #'s.

I bet you have a "correct-a-cap". They were popular in the 1990's to make the spark plug wires look pretty and parallel.

As you probably know, the order on a SBC should be 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

 

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 is the small block Chev firing order left bank (US driver's side being 1,3,5,6 front to back right bank being 2,4,6,8 front to back.
Rotation is clockwise.
You can tell the rotation of any distributor with a vacuum advance if you wrap your thumb around the vacuum advance an point your index finger around the distributor on the side it sits on. Your finger is pointing in the direction of rotation.

I have a feeling Just Gary nailed it LOL I had no idea those existed, I was like WTF and fixed all the cables and my car did not start, but now I gotta go check but now Im almost certain that is it, I still dont get why my timing is not getting any better, I might just change this cap and see if that helps, thanks to all!!!

you fixed it to the wrong cap...maybe?

But seriously, take a picture of your cap, so we can see what you see

 

Multi-meter will sort things out with that HEI cap

 

If it runs on when you shut if off.....set the idle down.

 

Im gonna take some pictures and post it but Im sure its one of those caps that Just Gary mentioned, but Im gonna switch it, its playing tricks with my head

I've been running a crossfire cap for over 20 years with no issues. The firing order you list is correct for it.

 

Does this help your head any?

 

Flashback to the late 90's..
A buddy picked up a distributor at a swap meet with one of those caps, without knowing it was on it, or even that there was such a thing. Short version says it wound up in little pieces after much frustration.

The initial issue was the timing, for some reason I cannot get my car to shut of correctly, it wants to stay on, is this only related to the timing? Could the cap be the culprit?

Turn it off in gear next time.

 

Alternator feed back or electric fan feed back? Tell us about these set up's on the car.

 

Better yet. Unplug the things I've just mentioned and see what happens. edit-one at a time and not both at the same time.

 

Would the timing be the same? 12 to 14?
