546 wagons got the L-72 427 in '69... Wow!

 

I might have been mistaken, didn't they put lo-po 427's in wagons?
The L-72/427 was rated at 425 hp, I don't think the old gal had one.

 

Here's one I did about 11 years ago. It has about 100,000 miles on it now. I just checked the rods & mains last week and still .002" & .003" clearance. Just like it was fresh. 427" give or take a few...

Yes it does.

 

Very observant Fordors, it's .030 over making 433".

When I built it I contemplated putting in a 4 1/4" stroker crank, which would have made a 489". Now, I wish I would have. But, it was going to be another $1500-$1800 with crank and +.400" rods.

It's been a good motor, but it's thirsty.

Hello,
After my friend’s dad finally got a new 327 powered 1963 Chevy Impala, we were reading all about the fastest Chevy that was built during this time. His 1955 Chevy 2 door sedan had mild custom touches, but was not a powerful, fast hot rod. So, we were sitting around thinking of ways to possibly get one of the new 427 motors in a simple Biscayne or Bel Air sedan for him. As teenage dreams go, these plans were a "doozy," but for some funny reason it was only restricted to those with factory ties.

But, since our friend just bought a 409 in a Biscayne the year before, we thought that was the way to go for the next real fast street hot rod. Our friend who worked at the local Chevrolet dealer in downtown Long Beach told us that people were ordering a 427 extra kit. This was the first generation of the Chevy 427.


With stories like this one and others in the weekly Drag News papers, the scene was set for us to plop down some money to perhaps get the new 427 version of a 409. Maybe we could transplant the 427 into the 58 Impala. That would have been really something as the 348 was still going strong, but an infusion of the 427 would still look like the 348, but a surprise would have been in store for those inquisitive racers. The C&O Stick Hydro was just itching for a friendly version of the 427. If, we had the extra money, we could have made our own super stock 58 Impala in 1963 with the high performance Chevy parts from the local dealer.

So, every 4/27 that rolls by during the years, brings back those silly teenage hangout chatter and dreams of what could have been. Wow, that would be a strong, z-11 powered 58 Impala with more power for those So Cal drive in cruises and street encounters. 4/27? We were so close…

 

Too bad the Ford 427 actually measures out to just under 425 ci (424.96 ci to be exact). But, the story goes that Ford's Marketing department agreed to the "rounding error" since NASCAR's engine displacement limit was 427 ci at the time, and Buick had just introduced a 425 ci V8 to the market.
