  4. So Dyers reports the 6-71 GMC unit I sent them for freshening was gonna be inadequate. However, they did provide a solution. IMG_20180427_121212361.jpg

Maybe somebody can school me on this, what are the tubes/hoses coming from the valve covers and going into tubes along the frame rail? I’ve seen in some of the other posts a similar setup going into what looks like a small recovery tank. Is it some sort of oil recovery system?

They are known as burn down tubes and their purpose is two fold. Obviously you won’t have a PCV system on a car of that nature but still, the crankcase pressure needs to be vented. BITD, valve cover breathers were used but as things evolved and engine performance and the occasional failure became more of a problem instead of breathers they used a closed system directly connected to a catch can.
In a high RPM run the hoses carry crankcase pressure and some of the resulting oil mist to the catch can, but say you burn a piston for example, that pressure will push a lot of oil and the catch can is there to (help) contain it.
Some of the earliest catch can systems were on a lot of Junior Fuel engines on the 1960’s. The high winding, small (305 cu. in. limit) engines they ran needed a closed system to keep oil off the drivers face mask. At that time it was not a mandated thing, but today even the size of the catch can is regulated for some classes.
