  4. Those are a few of the dozens I have in my hoard. My daily drivers are 66 GMC,s one is a long bed with granny 4 speed and the other a short bed step side with a factory powerglide. the truck pictured today was originally a 1964 283 powerglide. big window. short bed custom cab. I bought it with a pile of parts. new fenders rockers chrome bumper ect. someone blew it apart and then gave up on it. I bought it for $450 at a auction and everyone thought I paid too much! Its a project I eventually would like to build. ive got everything needed to put it back together. but I would sell it. 60 thru 66 trucks 032.JPG

wow, some sweet Bourbons. Bumping this thread up again hoping for some new action. I am getting a 65 fleetside longbed over to my driveway soon. Had posted it in classifieds and marked it sold but the deal did not go thru. I will repost it when I can get better pix. C'mon truckers, post up ypour trucks.

    back to top please

  12. The Viking has the torsion bar front suspension. the 61 short bed also has the torsion bar front. big rear glass. factory V8 and factory automatic. and no chrome or stainless trim? The tried picture is whats left of a 66 that was mounted on a 78 3/4 ton 4Wheel drive frame. It was in a shop that burned down. The last picture is the auto collum from a 66 that had a factory 60 thru 66 trucks 027.JPG 60 thru 66 trucks 028.JPG 60 thru 66 trucks 031.JPG 327 mill and a turbo 400 auto trans.

Don't see them too much anymore.
I never quite got the point of them on a utilitarian level, you would have thought once the fleetsides came out in 58 (non cameo) and prospective buyers saw the increase in capacity they would have dropped them due to diminished sales.
Fleet sales no doubt made up for it.

  16. I don't know, good question.
It's wicked easy to step up on the sides to load stuff, and less body to scratch.

    We like it
And after showing him some vintage push truck pics, I talked him into stacks lol

Hope you don't think I was diss' n your truck, sorry if it sounded like it.
You know what, as I've gotten older for some reason stake sides have attracted me too.
Neat, here in the Portland area there was a group of guys that always put on quite a show at Portland Speedway. Always looked nice, they had sideboards that said Northwest Pushtruck Association.

  18. No offense taken at all @DDDenny ;)
Along the same lines, why would Chevy make 2 different sized back windows? Was glass that expensive to justify a small and a large one?
Couldn't be as expensive as making that wrap around windshield.

Is there a trick to pulling the torsion bars out of the lower A arms?
These are stuck. Service manual says to just pull 'em out LOL
I'll try standing them up and soaking

are yall planning the disc brakes on front? if so i got to keep up with this to see how everything matches up. i used a mid 70's front end in my 63 but i dropped the whole front cross member and bolted the newer one in and only had to drill two holes.

Farmers liked the basics and didn't want what they didn't need, GM figured they needed to attract a wider audience with options such as the Custom Cab.
The 60-66 trucks dont look too bad with the small window, but I really don't like the way the 67's look with the small ones.
Can't help you on the torsion bars, never had any early ones.
May need to spray them with a good penetrant such as PB Blaster.

  21. We did swap the whole crossmember, the torsion bars wouldn't budge and the jack stands were in the way, so we had to pop the arms off.

    Interesting, thanks Ddd

  22. I can think of several reasons why the stepside bed was still used. Many buyers already had a stepbed truck. and bought a new one so things like stock racks or pipe racks would fit. With a step side its easy to reach into the bed center. Say you put a stock rack on your pickup. you needed taller sideboards on the fleetside because animals could climb up on the inner wheel well. and a step side was easier to clean out after hauling manure dirt gravel ect. and if you had the fender side spare tire it was easy to get to and you had the opportunity to make certain it was full of air. no crawling under to get to the spare tire. Especially in the mud and snow. And the factory was already tooled up to build the step sides. They are the same from 55 thru 66 with only minor differences of mounting locations on the frame.

what a great "Smokey" tribute. Love that awesome rig, thanx for the post. I am really obsessed with these trucks and am struggling to move forward with my truck. It gets harder as I get older to do a lot of this work myself, and it is expensive to get more work farmed out. But this thread gives me hope seeing others doing cool stuff. Keep'em comin folks!!
