Hot Rods Is it not getting enough air?

The K&N filter was marginally better but it still restricts air flow,I took the filter out when I left the cruse in last night and the engine ran considerably better.

I'll try Ricks idea until I order the frog mouth and use the fine mesh filter. HRP

 

Did you ever check for clearance between the bonnet and the base of filter element?

 

Yes I did Dave,there is no obstruction with the element and base. HRP

 

...........my 8N and Cabroilet run a washable unit like I run on my triple Kaw.....

 

I received five of the round type just today to replace all of my carbs filters.
I like them so far.
The mesh material is a rather cheap material but can be easily replaced with better material since the plastic ring pulls out to remove them.

 

Do those carbs' bowl vents go to atmosphere, or to the airhorn, inside the filter ?

 

Dan, inside of the filter at the air horn. If I am following you correctly.

 

The louvered air cleaner covers can be improved slightly by using a flat blade screwdriver and opening up each louver as much as possible. I noticed one time that the louvers were not uniformly open, some were almost closed completely so I opened them all as much as possible. It had to help.

 

Maybe a longer stud & run 'em double-stacked. More inlet area...

 

Maybe some thing like this. For a 48 IDA. Says it will filter down to .009”.

I am going to throw this out there because I can and not to slight anyone.

Foam filters make your carbs fire bombs as a rule. A simple backfire which happens more often than we would like to admit and your turnin and burnin.

I may think of taking a gauze filter ( like a K&N) apart and modifying it to work long before I would run a foam filter. Of course this is me personally.
