Caddy Engine Casting Numbers

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Slick50, Sep 11, 2009.

  1. Hi all,

    Here is some Caddy casting number info I came across a while ago, while I was trying to decipher my engine numbers. It's by far not a complete list, so if you can add to it feel free to do so, or send me the info and I will include it. This may be better placed elsewhere on the board, but I wanted to put it here so it would be seen by anyone who might find it useful.

    The info came from a site called "Swap Meet", but I've never been bright enough to find it after the first time I stumbled upon it. It is accurate for my engine numbers, but further than that I do not know so use it as you see fit. I have it as a word document if needed.

    Thanks Ken. Just bought a Caddy V-8 & not sure if it's a 331 or later motor. This helps.

    I’m having trouble figuring out which motor I have.

    Block casting number is 1461476
    Stamped into the bell housing (driver side)
    Is 4V5269

    Stamped into the front left deck is 556206628
    And ideas??

    I get 1461476 as a 1955 Olds 331 block. Not Caddy.

    On all the lists I have saved. Has it as an Olds. Maybe bad info. One PDF from a google search has this.

    Cadillac
    331 54-55 #1461476 w/o integral bell housing

    • Serial numbers and engine numbers were the same again.
    • They appeared
      • on a boss on the front right hand face of the engine block;
      • on the lubrication plate on the left front door pillar (1953-1957)
      • and on the right frame side member behind the motor support.
    • The first pair of symbols were "55" to designate the model year.
    • The next two symbols indicated series as follows:
      • "62" = Series 62 including Eldorado Specials;
      • "60" = Series 60 Fleetwood;
      • "70" = Series 70 Eldorado Brougham; and
      • "75" = Series 75 Fleetwood
    • The immediately following numbers, beginning at 00000 for each series, indicated the production sequence in consecutive order.
    • Ending numbers were the same for all series since the engines were installed in mixed production fashion.

    Hi guys. I was a member of the H.A.M.B. for a long time, but that was years ago. "Life" happened, a little boy was born, the career changed... Yadda yadda yadda. So anyhooo, stumbled upon this thread while researching something I found on a '58 Caddy thats been eating away at me for a few weeks now. It's nothing outrageous or anything, just... odd. I pretty much determined it was a 365 based on the 1465061 casting number on the intake. It's just a standard 4V intake as far as I can tell, but EVERY SINGLE OTHER INTAKE I've found anywhere online with this casting number is followed by a "-1", whereas the one I put eyes on a few weeks back was followed by a "-2". I've been unable to find another with this casting number followed by a -2. Any idea what the dash-digit means, or why this one isn't like all the other kids? Thanks in advance, and I'm hoping to rejoin the little family of guys that build go-fast if you'll have me!
