I love everything about this build. Just read through the whole thread and I'm in awe at your willingness to just do things. Dig the flames vers.2.

 

Clever on the grille! Bet that fella will be a bit heavy. Any reason you did not use a smaller diameter rod? What are your plans for steering box location or did I miss that element of the build. Wished i had 1/2 of your talent......still learning at 72

 

It is a bit heavy, This is why I used it.
1--stainless 3/8 rod was the only size my metal yard had.
2--stainless rod was $1.21 a foot. I think I have about $23.00 in rod.
3--stainless tubing would have cost me about $50-60 for the same footage.
4--I AM A CHEAP ASS!!!!!!!!!!!
As far as steering box location I need to get my motor and trans set so I can work around their size.

 

My buddy and I went down to my pops shop with the intention of getting my motor fired for the first time in 10 plus years this morning. Threw an old battery on the charge a few days ago grabbed a fresh gallon of gas and a can of starting fluid. We hooked up the battery pulled the plugs and rolled the motor over getting all the wd40 out of the cylinders that I had dumped in several months ago. Reinstalled the plugs rolled her over and no spark. Found a blown fuse, installed a new one and had spark but by that time my shity old battery had given up the ghost. I guess theres still hope at least the old flatty was'nt stuck

 

What is the rear dip stick for??? Is this van or that ever it is equipped with an auto matic trans??? I see some interesting adaptations for its fitment into the engine box. Oil filler tube, oil filter location,oil dip stick. What body style is this? Some Dodge Truck aficionado might want that body shell.

 

Yes its a 1959 dodge mail van 230 with a pushbutton trans.

 

Those are pretty rare not many left. The 59 230 is pretty desirable also. Best head and oiling. You keeping the automatic?

 

No auto. I found a 40 Dodge pickup three speed top loader. The guy Im getting if from has a ton of parts. bellhousing,pedals, flywheel.pressure plate, trans and driveshaft.

 

I picked up these at the Wichita swap meet thinking damn these are going to look Kool. They are early chevy truck cab lights and they fit the contour of the body dead on. I just dont dig them thought. Whats everyones thoughts?

 

I think the most utilitarian look is going to be a single tail light right in the center. I think an early 28 model A drum tail light would fit the bill. Thoughts?

 

I think single in the rear would look more in line with the build, IMHO.

 

Looks aside, with today's dumb@$$ tailgater's,I would want something higher! More on the level of at least motorcycle height. Down by the spring I's definitely cooler,but might not register with the typical modern driver.

 

I know low is not good but is it a form over function thing? I know I know its my life on the line.

 

Im making damn near everything for this thing so I might as well make a steering wheel!

 

I kinda like the cab lights. But your the one whose opinion really counts.

 

I like the side markers including the third in the center being something simple and vintage. Its all period and question...rear plate position? Just above or below center light which I assume may have the plate light as well?

One advantage of the side markers is you can have signals and give the arm a rest. they can also double as brake and the third center can be a third brake light. You have total control of light function of course.

 

Got my rim ruffed in after work today. Thinking I will need to add a fastener at the glue joints. I am also going to wrap the rim with a friction type string to give it the old timey race car vibe.

Well I'm a trim carpenter by trade. A good carpenter never tells his secrets!! O.K. I used a miter saw, router table and some sandpaper. Thats it.

 

I see you have the tools of the trade (including your thinking mind) with the alignment fixture...Yeah you should be proud.

It is called Batu. It is a Brazilian Mahogany.

 

Impressive! I saw some Chevs steering wheels, that's looks likes almost round, but they are hex o octogonal ones... Looks good for a speedters
