Bill Reeves and Mike Marinoff, ran a Latham supercharged 55 Chevy Bel Air in the C/Gas class.

"Bill Reeves 73, passed away on August 26, 2012. He spent most of his life in Milwaukee in the automobile business. But it was his early years in drag racing where he made his mark driving cars owned and tuned by the late, Mike Marinoff."

    Hello,

In the early months of 1960, we had already retired from racing the 58 Impala in the A/Stock class. The bigger 348 motors/4 speeds of 59/60 were too much to overcome in the same class. So, we started the 40 Willys coupe build with a 283 SBC/6 Strombergs. We were all jazzed in that we would be in the B/Gas class at Lions with the weight and motor combination. We did read all about the other competitors all over the USA running in B and C/ Gas. One car that surprised us was this 55 red/white Chevy Bel Air Hardtop in the Midwest C/Gas class.

“The first car Bill drove was a B/Gas '55 Chevy Bel Air that took home class honors in '59 and '60 at the World Series of Drag Racing. The car ran times in the high 11's and speeds over 120 mph. Then switching from the Latham Blower to a GMC in late 1959 did three things for the team: quicker ETs, faster speeds, and more trips to the winners circle.”

This photo looks like the 1960 Bakersfield Smokers March Meet where we saw this 55 Chevy in all its glory. (Al Hirshfield in the background) It was impressive as a competitor against the top west coast gas coupes and sedans. The Chevy looked like it drove to the Smokers Drag Race Event. (Bright red, white, American mags, etc.) It was a street machine with something sticking out of the hood. We knew it was in B/Gas and would eventually be our 40 Willys competitor if we stayed in that gas coupe class.

Back home, within a couple of months, we got the 671 GMC super charger and had it spec’d out for racing. We also received an Isky-Gilmer Blower Kit and accessory manifolds for our Willys. With the now, 292 CI rebuild and some fast goodies inside, added weight over the rear axle, we were able to drop down to the competitive C/Gas ranks until August 1960. But, that original 55 Chevy B/Gas sedan gave us food for thought. It can be done.

The lettering says C/Gas on the side of the door, but the small rear quarter window had the B/Gas designation for the current drag race event.

  15. ...cool stuff again this week, Bob, that garage is way too organized,...Ron,...that 56 rat fink is really good,...therail,...that dragster pilot should be looking strate ahead,...lol
since we're into 56 Chevs today, here's one I did yesterday,...was driving yesterday listening to some John Fogerty tunes and when I heard a line in his Midnight Special song, I thot that's a good name for an outlaw race car,...BTW, I just love the guitar riffs at the beginning of that song, awesome,...check it out.

..also got some Chevy 2-door woodies and a Buick today.

    Been awhile since I contributed.
The striped mannequin is my work.
The "rat hole bar-grill" is out of the estate of the late Ron Nelson who was not only a friend and customer of the shop but a long time member of the L A Roadsters. Still has the shop dust on it. Don't know the story behind it. Just thought you guys would get a kick out of it.

Looks like my formative years on the farm. Except for the mountains, I am a flatlander.

My attempt at a "woody", about 240 pieces of poplar, oak and aspen. It's approximately 20 inches by 40 inches.
